Meanwhile, the administration on Tuesday curtailed the night curfew duration by a half an hour, changing the timings to 10.30pm to 5am against the earlier timing of 10pm to 5am.

The city has been observing night curfew since April 6.

The decision regarding Sunday closure will be taken subsequently. Weekend lockdown has been limited to Sundays, when only essential shops, including barber shops, will be allowed to open and movement of vehicles will be restricted.

As the city was hit by the second Covid-19 wave, the administration had imposed the lockdown on May 4. On May 24, the administration had decided to open all non-essential shops from 9am to 3pm. On May 31, salons and barber shops were allowed to open. On June 8, after five weeks of closure, restaurants/bars were allowed to offer dine-in services at 50% capacity from 10am to 9pm. Previously, these were allowed to only deliver food.

At the peak of the second wave, the city was registered more than 800 new cases per day, which now has come down to less than 50 a day. On Tuesday, 40 cases were reported.

Chandigarh Beopar Mandal welcomed the extension in shopping hours. Charan Jiv Singh, president, said, “We demand restoration of regular shopping hours for all shops. But the fresh relaxation is a step in the right direction.”

Mohali eases restrictions too

Following the state government’s directions to ease restrictions, Mohali administration also allowed restaurants, eating joints, cinemas and gyms to open at 50% capacity from Wednesday. The number of people allowed at gatherings, including weddings and cremations, was also increased to 50. Under the new guidelines, which will remain in effect till June 25 when they will be again reviewed, daily night curfew will be in place from 8pm to 5am, with weekend curfew from 8pm on Saturday up to 5am on Monday, across the state. All essential activities, including those covered under existing ‘exemptions’, will remain unaffected. All restaurants, hotels, cafes, coffee shops, fast food outlets, dhabas, cinemas, gyms at maximum 50% of capacity, subject to all their employees having received at least one dose of vaccination. AC buses can also ply with 50% occupation.

Bars, pubs and ‘ahatas’ shall, however, continue to remain closed. All educational institutions i.e. schools and colleges will also continue to be closed. Mohali deputy commissioner Girish Dayalan said, “We will decide on the timings of shops on Tuesday and hopefully, extend the timings.”
