With 20 medals, Haryana athletes stamp their authority in Commonwealth Games

Haryana athletes stamped their authority once again to bag 20 medals for India in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) held in Birmingham; nearly 35 percent of the medals won by India.

As many as nine Haryana sportspersons won the gold (41 percent), four silver (25 percent) and seven bronze (30 percent) during the mega-event which concluded on Monday.

India won 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze to finish at the fourth spot behind Australia, England and Canada.

A total of 43 athletes from Haryana competed in the Commonwealth Games and Para Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Haryana wrestlers stole the show with Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, Deepak Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Naveen and Ravi Dahiya winning gold medals in their respective weight categories.

The 21-year-old, Nitu Ghanghas from Dhanana village defeated Demie-Jade of England in the women’s 48kg final to win gold. Amit Panghal from Rohtak’s Mayna village also won a gold in men’s flyweight (51kg) in boxing.

The Sonepat para powerlifter Sudhir scripted a Commonwealth Games record to win a gold medal in the men’s heavyweight final. India won the gold medal in para-powerlifting at the Commonwealth Games for the first time ever. The Indian women’s hockey team which won a bronze was led by Haryana’s Savita Punia who is a goal-keeper and included eight other players from the state.

The Haryana athletes’ performance comes at the back of the state’s top-class sports state policy. The Haryana government will give cash rewards to the Commonwealth Games medal and Para Commonwealth Games winners according to the existing state policy. The athlete for winning a gold medal would get richer by 1.5 crore, while the silver medallist and the bronze medallist would get 75 lakh and 50 lakh each. Meanwhile, Haryana athletes who won medals in the Birmingham games and seek jobs will also get job offers from the state.

Silver medal winners: Anshu Malik (wrestling), Shafali Verma (cricket team), Surender Kumar, Abhishek (both hockey), Sagar Ahlawat (boxing).

Bronze medal winners: Savita Punia, Navneet Kaur, Navjot Kaur, Nisha, Jyoti, Monika, Neha, Sharmila Devi, Udita (team event) (all hockey), Jasmine (boxing), Pooja Gehlot (wrestling), Pooja Sihag (wrestling), Deepak Nehra (wrestling), Sandeep Kumar (athletics), Mohit Grewal (wrestling).
