Police had recovered on Tuesday close to 1500 rare books, which they said belonged to GOC, earlier known as Madarsa Alia that was established in 1774 by the then nawab of Rampur.

Confirming the raid and detention of Abdullah, Rampur superintendent of police (SP) Ajay Pal said, “Abdullah was trying to be an obstacle during the raid being carried out in connection with the stolen books. We have detained him and his interrogation is on. Also, we have recovered more rare books that were stolen from the GOC.”

He also confirmed the recovery of some ancient furniture, also belonging to the Oriental College.

According to sources, two Nawabi era statues of lions, which belonged to Rampur Club that was established in 1903 by the then nawab, were also recovered. However, police are yet to confirm their recovery.

Investigation in the stolen books case began on June 16 after principal of GOC Zubair Khan lodged an FIR of theft at the Ganj police station in Rampur. In the FIR, the principal said that over 9000 books that were stolen from the school could be at the Jauhar University library.

Police claimed that the raid was conducted on an intelligence input that the books were indeed kept at the Jauhar University and efforts were being made to shift them to some other place. Jauhar University has been in the news ever since senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, who is also the chancellor of the university, was elected as member of Parliament from Rampur. A few days back the Rampur district administration had ordered the shifting of the main gate of the university. It had also cancelled lease of 7.13 hectare of land of the university recently.

Jauhar University officials and Azam Khan could not be reached for a comment.
