U.P. govt to adopt ‘Indore model’ for solid waste management

LUCKNOW: In a bid to ensure proper solid waste management in all urban areas of the state, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to implement the best practices followed by the civic authorities of Indore, which has consecutively bagged the top spot in the country’s cleanliness index.

Last week, a team dedicated to the cause studied Indore’s strategy to dispose of solid waste. During its two-day visit to Indore, the team also visited Asia’s largest bio-CNG plant located at the city’s trenching ground, according to the government’s communique.

The U.P. team that went to Indore included the representatives of the urban bodies of Mathura-Vrindavan, Jhansi, Aligarh, Saharanpur, Bareilly, Farrukhabad, Kushinagar, Ekdil Nagar, Moradabad, and Gorakhpur. State chief secretary Durga Shankar Mishra and Neha Sharma, director of the Swachh Bharat Mission of Uttar Pradesh, were also part of the team. They also visited Indore’s control command centre during the trip.

Following the visit, the U.P. team extended gratitude to Indore authorities for explaining their ways and strategies to deal with garbage. The officials added that U.P. too has plans to set up bio-CNG plants with a capacity to process 300-400 tonnes of wet waste in several cities.
