Red alert for ghat regions today, moderate rains in Pune city

According to the met department, there are multiple weather systems that are active and will result in vigorous rainfall activity in Maharashtra and adjoining states

Light rainfall continued to lash the city limits as monsoon is active again, however, India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted that catchment areas of the dams are likely to get good rainfall in the next few days. IMD has issued a red alert for ghat regions around Pune on Tuesday and moderate rainfall is likely in Pune city.

On Monday, Shivajinagar reported 3.3 mm rainfall, Pashan reported 5.2 mm, Lohegaon reported 2.6 mm, Chinchwad reported 1.5 mm, Lavale reported 3 mm and Magarpatta reported 1 mm rainfall till 6: 30 pm.

Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather forecasting department at the IMD Pune said that on August 9, very heavy to isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely in ghat regions around Pune city.

“In Pune city limits as well, the forecast is of overcast, a few intense spells and moderate to isolated heavy rainfall on August 9. We have extended the same forecast for August 10 for Pune city limits but the ghat regions may experience very heavy isolated rainfall on August 10,” said Kashyapi.

According to the met department, there are multiple weather systems that are active and will result in vigorous rainfall activity in Maharashtra and adjoining states.

“The monsoon trough is active and lies south of its normal position. It will continue to remain so till August 12. A well-marked low-pressure area over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal Odisha, north Coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining West central Bay of Bengal. It is likely to concentrate into a depression till August 9 and move west-northwestwards across Odisha and Chhattisgarh. An east-west shear zone runs over North Peninsular India in middle tropospheric levels. It is likely to persist till August 11,” said IMD officials.

The weather department added that under the influence of these, all four subdivisions in Maharashtra have been given weather alerts for the next few days.

“Red alert has been issued for central Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa and Vidarbha on August 9. Thereafter, the orange alert has been issued for central Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa and Vidarbha on August 10,” said IMD.
