Lok Sabha 2019 constituency: UP’s Faizabad is a politically-sensitive seat

After 1999, the BJP has won the seat only once. In 2009 and in 2004, the seat was won by candidates from the Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), respectively.

Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency in the Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh is held by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Before that, the Congress held the politically-sensitive constituency of Faizabad since the elections were first held in 1957. The grand old party has won seven times followed by the BJP at four times.

The Faizabad parliamentary constituency is some 70 kilometres from Ayodhya town, which houses the makeshift Ram temple at the disputed site where the Babri Masjid was demolished by Hindu kar sevaks (volunteers) in December 1992. The Faizabad Lok Sabha seat comprises five assembly segments — Dariyaba, Rudauli, Milkipur, Bikapur and Ayodhya.

Uttar Pradesh, which sends the maximum number of members to Parliament at 80, will go to polls in all the seven phases of the Lok Sabha election 2019. Votes will be counted on May 23.
