Lok Sabha 2019 constituency: Will Congress keep Chhikodi seat in Karnataka

Voting for the Lok Sabha election in Karnataka will be held in two phases on April 18 and April 23. The results will be declared on May 23.

The Chikkodi Lok Sabha seat, one of 28 parliamentary constituencies in Karnataka, was once considered the seat of power in northern part of the state.

B Shankaranand, former Union minister for petroleum, won seven times in a row from 1967 to 1996 on this seat. Union minister Ramesh Jigajinagi was elected thrice from this constituency between 1998 and 2004. In the 2009 election, Ramesh Katti retained the seat for the BJP but the next year, Congress’ Prakash Hukkeri won the seat.

Chikkodi, known as the sugar belt of Karnataka, is dominated by the Lingayats and there are a sizeable number of Kurubas, Marathas and Muslims. And this year, candidates of the rival BJP and Congress belong to the Lingayat community.
