A former bastion of the Congress party, Phulpur Lok Sabha has also been held by the Samajwadi Party since 1996 except in 2009 and 2014.

The former prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru represented the Phulpur parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh from 1957 till his death in office in 1964.

A former bastion of the Congress party, Phulpur Lok Sabha has also been held by the Samajwadi Party since 1996 except in 2009 and 2014. However, the Akhilesh Yadav-led party wrested it back in a by-poll in 2018 after the sitting member of Parliament Keshav Prasad Maurya quit on being elected to the state assembly.

Phulpur parliamentary constituency, which is partially rural, consists of Phulpur, Phaphamau, Soraon (SC), Allahabad North and Allahabad West assembly segments. The Other Backward Castes are the dominant population in the rural parts of the constituency and Kayasthas, Brahmins and Vaishyas are present mostly in the urban areas.

Uttar Pradesh, which sends the maximum number of members to Parliament at 80, will go to polls in all the seven phases of the Lok Sabha election 2019. Votes will be counted on May 23.
