As it happened: Jason Behrendorff starred with a five-wicket haul, Mitchell Starc scalped four while Marcus Stoinis picked one as Australia beat England by 64 runs Ben Stokes’ 89 went in vain as other batsmen failed to deliver on the big stage. Earlier, Eoin Morgan won the toss and asked Australia to bat first. Finch and Warner survived the early burst and put together a solid foundation. Aaron Finch cruised to a century, but then England bounced back. Finch departed and thus started the procession. Wickets kept tumbling, Australia never found the momentum they needed to accelerate after the bumper opening stand. Alex Carey scored 38 off 27 balls to lift them to 285.Follow England vs Australia Highlights below:

21:50 hrs IST

Four, four and four

21:35 hrs IST

Good over from Stoinis

Marcus Stoinis is keeping things tight and he is not letting the batsmen take him for a ride. England could muster just four singles from the over as the right-hand pacer didn’t let Stokes and Woakes free their arms.

21:29 hrs IST

SIX and SIX

Ben Stokes targets Glenn Maxwell has he hits him for two flat sixes towards mid wicket. The part-time spinner concedes 12 runs from the over as apart from the two sixes, Stokes was content with just defending the ball. He knows he has to remain till the end if England are to get closer to the target.

21:22 hrs IST

21:02 hrs IST

Fifty partnership

Stokes and Buttler have put together 50 runs and are leading England’s charge in the match. While Stokes has looked good and steady, Buttler has looked a bit shaky and is struggling to time the ball the moment. Nonetheless, they have put together fifty stand and have steadied the ship really well.

20:56 hrs IST

100 up for England

Ben Stokes sweeps Nathan Lyon for a boundary towards mid wicket and with that, England have crossed the 100-run mark in the 23rd over. Stokes, who seems to be struggling with his hamstring, is doing really well to keep England afloat in the chase.

20:49 HRS IST

Australia waste their review

As Michael Clarke said while commentating, ‘emotional review from Australia’. Stoinis insisted on going for DRS after the ball hit Buttler on the pads. Replays showed that the ball had hit him outside of the off-stump. Carey had told Finch that ball was going outside the stump but he went for DRS only on Stoinis’ insistance.

20:42 hrs IST

Expensive over from Stoinis

Ben Stokes continues to deal in boundaries as he now take the attack to Marcus Stoinis. The southpaw comes down the track and hits the ball over mid-on fielder’s head for a boundary. 8 runs come from the over from Stoinis as he starts off on a bad note.

20:35 hrs IST

Stokes looking good

Ben Stokes takes the attack to Pat Cummins and hits him for his second four of the innings. He came down the track and thumped the ball for a boundary towards mid wicket. If England are to get anywhere near to the target, Stokes and Buttler will have to come up with something spectacular.

20:27 hrs IST

Partnership needed

Ben Stokes has been in the middle for a while and he should take the initiative to hit runs a bit more freely. Jos Buttler, on the other hand, need to steady himself first and then start taking risk. This partnership remains crucial for England if they are to get anything out of the match.

20:20 hrs IST

Stat attack

This is the 9th time that there has been no scores of 30+ among the top 4 English batsman in an innings in World Cup. Also, this is the 2nd time that top 4 English batsman have been dismissed under 30 against Australia in World Cup.

20:13 hrs IST

Bairstow departs now

Jason Behrendorff picks his second wicket of the innings as he gets rid of Jonny Bairstow for 27. Short delivery from Behrendorff and Bairstow top edges it into the hands of Pat Cummins at mid wicket. England have lost their fourth wicket now.

20:06 hrs IST

50 up for England

Bairstow and Stokes have put together 24 runs so far and with that, England have crossed the 50-run mark in the 13th over. These two have done well to hold the innings together after three early wickets threatened to derail the chase.

19:59 hrs IST

Stokes off the mark

19:46 hrs IST

Maiden over

Pat Cummins starts off with a maiden over as Australia are firmly on top of their rivals at the moment. They have lost three early wickets and there is no sign of things changing straightaway. England need a partnership to bail them out of trouble.

19:40 hrs IST

Skipper falls now

Mitchell Starc drops the ball short and Eoin Morgan went for the pull shot. The ball took a leading edge and Pat Cummins took a good catch at fine leg. England have lost their third wicket now and are in big trouble. Atrocious batting from the Englishmen.

19:33 hrs IST

Morgan shows intent

Skipper Eoin Morgan comes down the track and hits Jason Behrendorff for a boundary straight down the ground. The left-arm pacer concedes 6 runs in the over as England look to get a move after the fall of two early wickets.

19:28 hrs IST

Root departs

Mitchell Starc has gotten the prized scalp of Joe Root for 8. Starc bowled a swinging delivery and Root missed the line of the ball and it crashed into the stumps. England have lost their second wicket as Eoin Morgan joins Jonny Bairstow in the middle. Wicket maiden for Starc as Australia are off to a flying start in England chase.

19:21 hrs IST

Stat attack

James Vince going back into the huts set an unfortunate record for England. This is the first time in World Cups and ninth time in ODIs, that the opening partnership for England has been broken without a run on the board against Australia.

19:15 hrs IST

Root starts well

Joe Root hits his first boundary of the innings off Mitchell Starc. The left-arm pacer bowled on to the pads of Root and the right-hander simply flicked the ball towards fine leg for a boundary. Starc concedes 7 runs off his first over.

19:07 hrs IST

Australia strike early

Jason Behrendorff has provided a breakthrough to Australia on the second ball of the chase itself as he castles James Vince for 0. The right-hander was beaten for pace and swing and the ball crashed into his middle and off.

19:01 hrs IST

Chase begins

Jason Behrendorff has the new ball in his hands and he will bowl the first over of the innings. James Vince and Jonny Bairstow are opening the innings for the hosts as they chase 286 to strengthen their position at the top half of the table.

18:50 hrs IST

Australia eye early wickets

Despite Finch ton, Australia aren’t in a good position as England somehow managed to restrict them under 300. The game plan for the defending champions will be to pick early wickets and put pressure on the hard-hitting English batsmen.

18:36 hrs IST

Innings over

Carey has played a cameo here. Makes room and smacks the final ball through covers to finish with a boundary. He has lifted Australia to 285/7. Yes, this is 40 runs short than what Australia would have expected, but England have a score to chase, Australia have a score to defend

18:26 hrs IST

2 overs remain

This has been a superb fightback by England, Australia cannot believe the hole they have dug themselves into after such a prolific start and the superb century by the captain. Alex Carey has the ability, can he power them to 280 on this surface?

18:21 hrs IST

Cummins goes

The procession refuses to stop. Now Cummins wafts at a wide one, nicks it and the ball carries to Jos Buttler who tumbles over and takes the catch. Good bowling by Chris Woakes, England are really getting all the momentum here, this has not been a good phase for Australia

18:13 hrs IST

Smith falls

This has been a brilliant comeback by England, they have kept chipping away at the wickets and after the dismissal of Aaron Finch, Australia have never found any momentum. Smith wanted to slog the ball over mid-wicket, does not time it and drags it across to long on. Australia have slipped away here

18:01 hrs IST

Smith holds the key

England have pulled things back here and Steve Smith is the key man for Australia. He is joined in the centre by Alex Carey, who too is a dangerous batsman lower down the order, but Smith has to play right till the end, Australia need a score in excess of 280.

17:58 hrs IST

Stoinis run out

Steve Smith reaches out, drives a ball to wide long off and takes off. Stoinis always wanted a second run, he sprints, Smith has turned his back to him and there is a massive breakdown in communication. Stoinis and Smith are shaking hands and Buttler takes the bails off at the striker’s end.

17:52 hrs IST

England have pulled things back

This is a good passage of play for the hosts. They have managed to pull things back nicely. Stoinis and Smith are being watchful, but they will look to accelerate.

17:39 hrs IST

Maxwell departs

He smacked a 6 and then a four, he looked dangerous and then like Glenn Maxwell, guided a short of a good length ball straight into the hands of Jos Buttler. England have the 3rd wicket and Australia might just get derailed here. Good period of play for the hosts

17:27 hrs IST

Finch 100, Finch out

The Australian captain notched up his century, soaked up the applause, hugged Steve Smith and then took guard again. Archer bowled a bumper, Finch went for the hook, ball takes the top edge and is caught at deep fine leg. Well, England will be happy with the end result, Australia will be happy with the platform.

17:14 hrs IST

Archer is back

Eoin Morgan is on the attack. He has brought back Jofra Archer and wants to attack Steve Smith when he is fresh. England need to keep picking up wickets if they are to haul back this scoring rate

17:09 hrs IST

Stokes strikes

He had to be the man for Eoin Morgan and England. Runs up, bowls a full delivery, there is shape to the delivery, Khawaja plays all over it and the ball smashes the stumps. England needed this wicket and Ben Stokes has pulled one back for England.

17:03 hrs IST

Australia bossing the game right now

16:56 hrs IST

Stokes in the attack

Well, Eoin Morgan is desperate for a wicket and Ben Stokes has the ball in his hand. Very often, the all-rounder makes things happen and he needs to do it for his skipper. England need a wicket, Australia are bossing this at the moment

16:50 hrs IST

Buttler spills it

Missed stumping! That was a regulation take but Buttler fails to collect the ball. Usman Khawaja looks upwards to thank the powers above. Well he should thank Buttler instead. A superb googly from Rashid, Khawaja had no clue and unfortunately neither did Buttler behind the stumps. England are having a dreadful day in the field.

16:48 hrs IST

No slip!

Edged and four! No slip for Moeen Ali and Finch once again survives and guess what collects another boundary.

16:43 hrs IST

Finch on the charge

He might have lost his partner but that doesn’t mean Finch will change his approach. He takes on the long-on fielder and clears it easily to collect his second six of the match - both off Moeen Ali.

16:36 hrs IST

Warner falls for 53

OUT! England were desperate for a wicket and Moeen Ali provides the breakthrough. The extra bounce does the trick for Ali. This is flatter and around off, Warner goes back and initially looks to cut but the ball takes off. Warner is surprised by it. He looks to bail out of the shot but it is too late. The ball hits the top part of the bat and balloons to point where Root takes a catch moving to his left. A big stand comes to an end. England will now look to pull things back a little.

16:32 hrs IST

500 runs for Warner in this World Cup

Did someone say Warner is not at his best? He surely isn’t but if not being at your best brings 500 runs for your team in 7 innings then be it. Superb stuff from the left-handed opener.

16:26 hrs IST

Warner joins the party

20th ODI fifty for David Warner.

6th fifty+ score vs England in ODIs. First fifty vs England after 7 intervening innings. Last fifty was in 2015 at Southampton. He scored 59 in that innings.

4th fifty+ score in his last 5 innings in ODIs.

16:22 hrs IST

Fifty for Finch

25th ODI fifty for Aaron Finch, not the most convincing one but he will take it any day at any given point. This is turning out to be a great opening partnership for Australia.

16:20 hrs IST

Warner takes on Rashid

Just like he did to the fast bowlers, Warner straightaway tries to attack Adil Rashid, doesn’t connect well in the first ball but makes it up in the third ball with a thundrous sweep shot and follows it up with a backfoot punch past covers for another boundary.

16:06 hrs IST

Brute power from Finch

FOUR! That was not all that short to be honest but Finch does extremely well to quickly transfer his weight and muscle it past the square-leg fielder for a boundary. This is not looking good for England.

16:01 hrs IST

Wood leaking runs

12 runs from the over, not a good one from Wood. He erred on both sides of the wicket. Warner and Finch looking to drive the advantage home now

15:55 hrs IST

2 boundaries

A couple of boundaries and a few play and misses in between. This over sums up the match so far. Nothing that Chris Woakes did wrong there but credit to Finch for remaining positive despite not being in the best of touches today.

15:49 hrs IST

Fifty partnership

5th fifty partnership for the opening wicket for Australia against England in World Cups.

7th fifty+ stand between the pair for the opening wicket in World Cup. 6 out of the 7 fifty+ partnerships between the pair have been in this World Cup.

21st fifty+ partnership between the pair in ODIs.

15:41 hrs IST

Powerplay ends

10 runs coming from the last over of the first Powerplay and Australia have reached 44 for no loss. Be it luck or anything else, Australia would be the happier team after the first 10 overs.

15:36 hrs IST

Oohs and Aahs

An edge here, an LBW shout there, a ball just going over the stumps, England have had everything but a wicket in the first few overs. Finch and Warner have somehow managed to hold their fort.

15:26 hrs IST

Brilliant from Woakes

Woakes had both Warner and Finch hopping in this over. Finch survived a close LBW shout and Warner nearly lost his off stump there. England are knocking on the doors for the first wicket.

15:21 hrs IST

Australia riding their luck

Almost, almost the first wicket for England. Finch once again plays away from his body and scoops it towards the point, where James Vinces makes an honest attempt but fails to hold on to it. A half chance for sure.

15:16 hrs IST

First boundary for Warner

Good from Warner. Archer bangs it in short, Warner was quick to go on the backfoot and pull it in the gap to collect his first boundary.

15:11 hrs IST

Warner flirts with danger

Uppish and just over the point fielder’s head, Warner will come back for two. Not the most convincing of shots from the left-hander, he didn’t expect the ball to bounce from that length but it did. A very good over from Woakes, only 2 from it.

15:07 hrs IST

Delightful from Finch

FOUR! Full and wide outside off, a so un-Archar like delivery and Finch takes full advantage of it. Takes a good stride forward and times it to perfection to collect a boundary off Archer’s first ball.

15:02 hrs IST

Almost a wicket

Edged and it flies over the second slip for a boundary. Nearly an ideal start for Woakes and England. Pitched right up, Finch flashes hard and that’s what goes in his favour as the edge flies over the slips. A moral victory for Woakes but 4 runs to Australia.

14:58 hrs IST

Woakes with the new ball

The players are out in the middle. It looks like Aaron Finch will take the first ball for Australia and for England, like always, it will be Chris Woakes. The countdown begins...

Playing XIs

Australia (Playing XI): David Warner, Aaron Finch(c), Usman Khawaja, Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey(w), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Jason Behrendorff

England (Playing XI): James Vince, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan(c), Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler(w), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Mark Wood

Finch speaks

‘Not too disappointed about batting first. Wasn’t too sure about the wicket, but I would have probably bowled first as well. Two changes for us - Nathan Lyon and Jason Behrendorff in, they replace Adam Zampa and Nathan Coulter-Nile. We have played some consistent cricket without being really outstanding, think we can still improve. If we go too hard, we will be opened up in the death overs, we found it out against Pakistan. We aren’t really bothered about how the crowd react (to Smith and Warner). Every game is important, in such a condensed tournament, two points is crucial and we can’t take any game lightly.’

14:34 hrs IST

Morgan wins toss, England bowl first

‘We are going to bowl. No-brainer, it’s a bit soft on the top, it rained overnight and the wicket was under covers. Hopefully, the sun will come out later and make batting easy. We are playing the same XI. Jofra had a slight side issue and we had a precautionary fitness test. We are confident, we have had some success against Australia recently and think we have a good side.’

14:28 hrs IST

Pitch report

‘The pitch is a little bit to the east and it means the square boundaries are short. The straight boundaries are huge though. It’s overcast, there might be a bit of movement, some green grass on the pitch, but it’s dry underneath, although it looks a bit cold. The captain winning the toss would like to bowl first’, says Michael Clarke in his pitch report

Morgan won’t stop fans from booing Smith, Warner

England captain Eoin Morgan insists it is not his job to tell supporters how to react to shamed Australia stars David Warner and Steve Smith when the arch rivals meet in a crucial World Cup clash on Tuesday.

Warner and Smith have found themselves booed by some fans in England after returning to international cricket following year-long bans for ball-tampering.

Australia coach Justin Langer has pleaded for the taunts to stop, with India captain Virat Kohli and Pakistan skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed telling their supporters to lay off the duo.

Player battles

It will be a clash of titans when tradition rivals England and Australia take on each other in the ICC World Cup 2019 at the Lord’s on Tuesday. England, who start the tournament as favourites, are currently fourth in the points table and they have an impressive net run rate of +1.457.On the other hand, Australia are currently second in the points table with five wins from six matches and a decent net run rate of +0.849.

Jofra Archer is having a fitness test

England’s newest pace sensation has reportedly picked up a side problem ... and is being put through his paces as we speak. Well, not the start the hosts would have wanted.

Well, now it is confirmed that he is fit to play.

England’s batsmen one-dimensional, not versatile - Boycott

England’s “one-dimensional” batsmen are flat-track bullies who do not have an alternative plan if they are required to graft an innings in bowler-friendly surfaces, former batsman Geoffrey Boycott has said.

“England are a one-dimensional batting unit and don’t seem to have a plan B or C,” Boycott wrote in a column for The Telegraph. “If they do have alternative plans, they do not execute them very well.

England Predicted XI against Australia

However, despite the shocking result, it is highly unlikely that England will tinker with their playing XI. However, there is a good chance that Liam Plunkett can make his return to the side in place of Chris Woakes. Woakes has not been that effective lately and Plunkett’s raw pace and bounce can be an asset against the Aussies.

Read about their predicted XI.

13:22 hrs IST

Australia Predicted XI against England

When it comes to the team composition, it is highly unlikely that Australia will be making any changes to their side. The only possible change can be the inclusion of Nathan Lyon in place of Adam Zampa but the chances of that happening is quite low. The team performed quite well against Bangladesh and they will be looking to repeat that show once again when they take on tournament favourites England at the Lord’s.

The different qualification scenarios

Australia

They are slated to play against England, New Zealand and South Africa and need to win one more match to guarantee qualification. However, if they stay on 10 points, they would then hope that Sri Lanka lose at least two of their remaining fixtures, and Bangladesh and Pakistan lose at least one match.

‘New MS Dhoni of world cricket’

Justin Langer has hailed Jos Buttler as the new MS Dhoni of world cricket.

“Jos is an unbelievable player. I love watching him bat. He is the new Dhoni of world cricket,” said Langer.

“I hope he gets a duck in this (Tuesday’s) game obviously, but I saw him at Somerset and he is an unbelievable athlete and an incredible finisher,” the Australian coach added on the eve of their World Cup match against England. Buttler has scored 3728 runs at an average of 41.42 and a strike-rate of 120.25 in 137 matches.

World Cup pressure, England and Australia

England are under pressure - well, how did this happen? The number 1 side, the overwhelming favourites are suddenly feeling the pinch and now, they are up against them, yes, Australia. Eon Morgan and side lost to Sri Lanka, they lost some of the swagger and when they take on Australia, they need to curb down on the swagger and focus on getting over the line. Flip the coin, and there is Australia - the side which has discreetly in an almost unAustralian way gone about its business. A blip against India, few boos here, few sloganeering there, but Aaron Finch and side have cast it all away as white noise and have marched on. On paper, this could be a match between England batting and Australian bowling, but when the match begins, that paper can be crumbled up and thrown away.
