'BCCI was asleep for 3 years. They failed to present any proof against me': Former Pakistan umpire on getting banned

Jun 28, 2022 09:49 AM IST

Former Pakistan umpire Asad Rauf was accused of taking bribes from bookies and placing bets during IPL 2013. He denied all claims in a recent interview.

Former ICC elite panel umpire Asad Rauf had a controversial end to his career. Currently owning a thrift shop to sell clothes and shoes at Landa Bazaar in Lahore, the 66-year-old was accused of taking bribes from bookies and also placing bets on matches during IPL 2013. Speaking to Cricket Pakistan, Rauf denied all claims and also revealed that he has a judge's verdict as evidence to prove that he is innocent. "The supposed incident occurred in 2013 and BCCI were asleep for three years. They opened up an inquiry in 2016 and it was a forced inquiry because there was no truth to it", he stated.

"They failed to present any substantial proof against me and I still have the judge's verdict which states that any proof or evidence against Asad's case is missing in charge".

The former umpire also explained that he had already planned his resignation after 2013 and had informed ICC. He also revealed that the ICC never approached him regarding the controversy.

"I told ICC that I will be handing in my resignation after 2013. I am answerable to ICC and not to the BCCI; if the BCCI wanted to lodge a one-side case against me in India then that's on them. Because as far as I am concerned, the ICC never took charge of the situation because there was no truth to these allegations to begin with", he explained.

Other than his thrift store, Rauf also owns an iron and metal business and he claims to have started both before his umpiring career began.

"This work [Landa bazaar shop] is an old business of mine and had I not pursued becoming an umpire, I would have been doing this exact thing. Along with this, I also have an iron and metal business. I started all these things long before I decided to pursue umpiring", he said.

During his career, Rauf umpired in 49 Tests, 98 ODIs, 23 T20Is and eight women's T20Is. Before his umpiring career, he was also a right-hand batter and played in his country's domestic cricket circuit.
