India embark on a challenging tour of South Africa. Challenging because the team is yet to win a Test series on South African soil. India have managed to win three Tests on South African soil – 2006 in Johannesburg, 2010/11 in Durban and the latest being in 2018 in Johannesburg. Although India lost the series 1-2, it was their performance at the Bull Ring which triggered India's remarkable string of performance which was to come playing overseas.

Having been removed as India captain, Kohli would be fiercely determined to lead the Test side and do so from the front. Kohli has gone over two years in international cricket without a century and Indian cricket fans would be hoping that Kohli no longer being captain in all three formats would take the load off him and allow the star Indian cricketer to bat more freely if India are to create history this time around.

Kohli is India's most successful Test captain, having led the team to 39 wins from 66 matches. Under him, India beat Australia on their soil in a Test series for the first time in 70 years when they lifted the 2018/19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy winning it 2-1. Earlier this year, the Kohli-led Indian unit had England on the mat and were leading the Test series 2-1 before the fifth match was called off due to a Covid scare.
