George Bartlett’s 110, his maiden first-class hundred, helped Somerset to a total of 321 for five at stumps.

There was no hint of the trouble to come when left-hander Trescothick, on 95, played a ball from Matt Parkinson defensively on the leg side and collapsed.

He needed the assistance of a runner to complete a 137-ball century and Somerset coach Jason Kerr said: “It’s just been confirmed that Marcus has got a broken right fifth metatarsal so he’ll be out for the foreseeable future.

“But it’s too early to say whether he’ll be back later in the season.

“We need to get clarity on the extent of the break. If it’s a clean break, it’s just a few weeks’ recovery and then we’ll get him back on his feet.”
