India vs Australia live cricket score, 1st Test Day 5 in Adelaide: Kohli and Co win by 31 runs, create history
Live Updates: The Indians bowlers have been brilliant and Virat Kohli and boys have registered a 31-run win. This is the first time that the Indians have won the first Test of the series in Australia. The Indian boys are jubilant as skipper Kohli raises his hands towards the dressing room. ((Full Scorecard)). Follow India-Australia Day 5 updates below -
India win opening Test by 31 runs
Hazlewood edges and KL Rahul takes the catch as Ashwin picks another one. Just at the stroke of tea the game comes to an end. Ashwin has done it and the face of skipper Kohli says it all. Relief writ large on the face. This is the first time that the Indians have won the first Test of a series Down Under.
Every run being cheered by the crowd
Some banter in the commentary box, some cheering by the crowd, this match is going down to the wire it seems. And Hazlewood comes up with an upper-cut into the third-man boundary. The Indians are slowly coming under pressure here as there is nothing to lose for the Australians here and the two batsmen making the most of that situation. Need another 33 runs. Can they do it?
10:26 hrs ISTNo-ball adds to drama
Everything happening here. The first time Lyon misses one and the ball hits the pad, the umpire stretches his arm out to tell Ishant that it was a no-ball. That looked plumb in front and Kohli is not impressed with that one. It was umpire’s call if Lyon had taken the DRS. This is one drama-filled closing session here.
10:15 hrs ISTGOAT delaying the inevitable
Lyon will not go down without a fight it seems. Batting on 28 off 35 balls, he has looked decently comfortable for someone coming in to bat at No.10. Can Hazlewood give him the support that GOAT needs to take the Australians to an improbable win in the first Test? For the moment, does not look like.
10:05 hrs ISTIndia need one more wicket
The Indian bowlers have been very disciplined and they now need just 1 wicket with Lyon and Hazlewood looking to delay the inevitable. Kohli now turns to his senior-most bowler Ishant to finish things off here at the Adelaide Oval. Do we have some more twist lined up here? What a Test match it has been.
09:54 hrs IST9 down for Australia
India need one wicket now that Bumrah has sent back the dangerman Cummins. Cummins goes for 28 and that is the game more or less for the Indians. He was batting well there, but the Indian bowlers have been bowling a brilliant line and Cummins finally edges one and Kohli does not miss that one. The throwing of the ball from the skipper shows that Kohli was starting to get a bit frustrated here.
09:50 hrs ISTGetting more dramatic here
68 more runs to get here and 2 wickets to pick for India. This one looks like it could head down to the wire. What a start to the series here in Adelaide Oval. This is what the cricket fans across the world would have wished for when the series got underway four days back. Tension starting to show on the face of the Indian skipper as every run takes Australia closer to the target.
09:38 hrs ISTPant drops Lyon
Lyon gets a life and Bumrah is just not impressed as Pant drops an easy one. That was headed straight to him, but Pant had already moved towards the leg side even though the ball had pitched on off. That was bad anticipation from the keeper and the end result is a dropped catch after taking 11 catches in the match so far. Hopefully it will not cost India the game here as Lyon gets a life on 7.
09:31 hrs ISTLyon looking to give Cummins support
Lyon has been working on his batting and he is clearly looking to give Cummins some company as the hosts are looking at a miracle here with two wickets in the bag. The Indian bowlers have been on the mark and have been bowling patiently. It is all about the tailenders losing concentration and trying a false shot here and there.
09:21 hrs ISTShami gets Starc finally
This is the wicket that the Indians would have been looking for. Shami gets Kohli the breakthrough that they would have wanted as Starc walks back for 28. The Australians still need 95 runs with just two wickets in the bag. Pant picks his 11th catch of the game and that is the most for any Indian.
09:15 hrs ISTCummins-Starc partnership getting more solid
This is not the kind of determination that the Indian bowlers would have wanted to see from Cummins and Starc here as the two have been batting solidly. They have already added 41 runs and also the new ball has already been taken, so nothing really to look forward to for Kohli the skipper here. This is looking to get more close than what it seemed after the Indians sent back Paine.
09:05 hrs ISTAussies need another 100
Every run vital here as the Aussies now need another 100 runs with just 3 wickets in the bag. Whatever the outcome of this game, cricket has definitely been the ultimate winner as India coach Ravi Shastri would say. Five days of intense action and top-quality fight from both teams. Can Virat Kohli and boys seal the deal before tea here? One more wicket is what the Indians will need it seems.
08:55 hrs ISTLot of chatter from around the bat
The Indians are high on spirit as they see history round the corner. They now need just 3 wickets to win this match and register a 1-0 lead for the first time Down Under. They have never won the first game of a Test series here and that has seen the boys around the bat have a word or two with Starc and Cummins. They know it is all about being patient and breaking the focus of the tailenders.
08:45 hrs ISTStarc and Cummins delaying inevitable
The Indian bowlers have been really working up a good rhythm here and both Starc and Cummins looking to make sure that they can stretch the game as far as they can and not cut a sorry figure. Upsets have happened before and who knows, this could be another miracle waiting to happen at the Adelaide Oval. But for now, they are only delaying the inevitable.
08:35 hrs ISTIndians look to add pressure
With just 3 wickets to go, the Indian bowlers have started to attack further. The close-in fielders are there to grab any opportunity that comes their way. Ashwin bowling a beautiful line here and Bumrah as usual looking to attack the stumps for wickets. The quality of bowling has been India’s biggest gain in recent times.
08:25 hrs ISTBumrah hits Starc
Gone are the days when fast bowlers would not bowl bouncers to their counterparts. Bumrah bangs it in short and that heads straight towards Starc’s helmet. The Aussies pick a leg-bye, does not seem anything serious as Bumrah enquires. The physio is out on the field to take a precautionary look at the Australian batsman. The score reads 189/7. India need 3 more wickets while Australia need another 134 runs here.
08:15 hrs ISTBumrah gets Paine
Bumrah gets Tim Paine for 41 in the second over after lunch and looks like Virat Kohli and boys are in a hurry to finish this one here and register a historic win. The Indians have never won the first game of a series in Australia. India need three more wickets. 10th catch in the game for Pant and he is having a beauty of a game.
08:00 hrs ISTBowlers put India on top
With the new ball taken, Indian bowlers will look to take the team home in the second session. Australia have four wickets in hand and they need 137 to win, but one would feel that it is India’s game to lose from here. Fascinating two sessions of play left in the day. It can be said that we will get a result one way or the other.
07:40 hrs ISTIndia have their noses ahead
Paine is capable of doing the damage for Australia but as things stand, one would feel that it is India who are in the driver’s seat.
07:32 hrs ISTThat's lunch! Paine (40*) and Cummins (5*) make it through to the break with Australia 6-186 and needing 137 more to win: https://t.co/lTUqyqRMzW #AUSvIND pic.twitter.com/LhkfWFTzGG

First session ends
Tim Paine and Pat Cummins have successfully seen out the Indian bowlers as Australia head into Lunch at 186/6. The duo have put on 30 runs off 65 deliveries so far. Two wickets have fallen today thus far with Ishant Shamra getting rid of Travis Head and Jasprit Bumrah removing Shaun Marsh. Australia need 137 runs to win while India need four wickets.
07:24 hrs ISTAshwin sharing new ball with Ishant
Virat Kohli has kept Ashwin into the attack despite taking the new ball and he remains India’s most dangerous bowlers in these conditions. With the first session coming to an end, India will look to pick one more wicket here.
07:19 hrs ISTNew ball taken by India
So India have finally opted to take the new ball as Ishant Sharma will bowl the first over with it. With lunch fast approaching, India will hope for a wicket just on the stroke of it.
07:13 hrs ISTPaine leading Australia’s charge
Skipper Time Paine is rotating the strike well and he is also scoring runs in the process. This time, he flicks the ball fine off Shami and it goes for a boundary towards fine leg. India need to get his wicket soon as he is playing really well at the moment.
07:07 hrs ISTPant down on the ground
A throw from Ishant Sharma at long off hit Rishabh Pant in the hand and then crashes into his ribs and the wicket-keeper is down on the ground wincing in pain. KL Rahul goes up to him to check on him but he seems to be ok and it doesn’t look series.
07:00 hrs ISTBowling change
Ishant Sharma returns into the attack and he replaces Jasprit Bumrah. Ishant scalped the first wicket of the day when he got rid of Travis Head in his first spell.
06:52 hrs ISTDRS saves Cummins
India thought they have picked their seventh wicket of the day when Ashwin produced an edge of gloves of Pat Cummins and he was caught by the fielder at forward short leg. After he was given out, Cummins asked for the DRS and replays showed that he hadn’t nicked it. The decision has been overturned now.
06:45 hrs ISTStat attack
First time dismissed by an Indian pacer in 6 innings vs India. Strike-rate of 36.14 by Marsh — 3rd lowest for him in an innings of 50+ runs in Tests.
06:40 hrs ISTJasprit Bumrah strikes
That is the wicket that India wanted and Jasprit Bumrah has provided just that as gets rid of Shaun Marsh for 60. After pitching the ball moved away from Marsh and took the faintest of edges off the bat and keeper Pant took an easy catch. Australia are six down now.

India need to break this partnership
Shaun Marsh and Tim Paine are frustrating the Indian bowlers as they are looking increasingly settled in the middle with every passing over. The duo have already stitched together 38 runs for the sixth wickets and keeping the Indian bowlers at bay.
06:26 hrs ISTGood first over from Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah replace Mohammed Shami into the attack and after he went for runs in his previous over. Bumrah conceded just three runs in the over and kept things tight. Murali Vijay is being introduced into the attack to give some rest to Ashwin.
06:20 hrs ISTStat attack
10th Test fifty for Shaun Marsh. 1st Test fifty for Marsh in 4th innings of a Test. 1st Test fifty in 14 innings for Marsh. 1st Test fifty vs India in 4 innings. 337 days since Marsh last scored 50+ runs in an innings.
06:14 hrs ISTIndia leaking runs
Mohammed Shami concedes two boundaries in his over and that makes it three in two overs. The first one was chance as Paine edge the ball on the leg side and Pant couldn’t reach it as it went with his right hand where he had to go with his left. Then, Marsh flicks the ball towards mid wicket for his fifth boundary of the innings.
06:07 hrs ISTFifty for Marsh
Shaun Marsh is keeping hold of the innings from one end and now he hits a boundary towards mid wicket to bring up his half century in style. This is Marsh’s maiden Test fifty in the fourth innings of a Test. Australia won’t go down without a fight.
05:59 hrs ISTFIFTY! Shaun Marsh brings up a quality half-century with a boundary! It comes off 146 balls and it's his first in the fourth-innings of a Test: https://t.co/lTUqyqRMzW #AUSvIND pic.twitter.com/WJSiQUIRhD

Ashwin on song
Spinner Ravinchandran Ashwin is continuing to bowl well from end and he is creating the pressure on the Aussie batsmen, who are reluctant to take him for runs. He bowls another maiden over to keep things tight for India.
05:52 hrs ISTStat attack
Travis Head dismissed for 14 by Ishant Sharma. 4th consecutive dismissal of Head by a pacer. 4th consecutive wicket for Ishant with the batters score under 15. 5th consecutive wicket for Ishant with the batters score under 20 in Australia.
05:47 hrs ISTBowling change
Mohammed Shami comes into the attack in place of Ishant Sharma, who was responsible for the first wicket of the day. Shami scalped couple of crucial wickets yesterday and will look for similar sort of performance today as well.
05:42 hrs ISTFirst boundary of the morning
Short and wide from Ishant and Paine cuts the ball hard on the offside for a boundary towards backward covers. With that, the Aussie skipper also gets off the mark. The hosts need more of such shots to put the pressure back on the visitors.
05:36 hrs ISTSkipper Paine to lead from the front?
With Shaun Marsh holding the innings from one end, the onus will be on skipper Tim Paine provide the southpaw with good support from the other end. Paine has shown in the past that he can hold his own in the middle and he will expected of the same today as well.
05:29 hrs ISTIshant provides the breakthrough
India have finally managed to break the partnership as Ishant Sharma gets rid of Travis Head for 14. Ishant bowls fast and short and the ball takes a leading edge off Head’s bat and Rahane takes a simple catch in the slip cordon.

Marsh, Head on the money
Shaun Marsh and Travis Head are negating whatever the Indian bowlers are throwing at the them currently. They are not looking for anything extravagant and are just going forward steadily, taking one ball at a time. Skipper Virat Kohli needs to come up with a different plan.
05:16 hrs ISTSteady start for Indian bowlers
Four overs have been bowled by Indian bowlers so far with Ashwin and Ishant bowling two each. The duo have conceded just five runs so far but they haven’t troubled the batsmen much.
05:10 hrs ISTGood over from Ishant
Ishant concedes three runs from his first over of the day. But there weren’t any wicket-taking deliveries and he didn’t trouble the batsmen enough in his over. He will look to change that in the coming overs. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli is off the pitch for some reason and he pointed two fingers in somebody’s direction before leaving the ground.
05:05 hrs ISTMaiden over
Ashwin bowls a maiden over to Marsh to begin Day 5. Both these players hold the key for their respective teams on this day. Ishant Sharma will now bowl the second over of the day.
05:00 hrs ISTFirst session begins
The players are making their way out in the middle and we are about to get underway with the first session of the day. R Ashwin as the ball in his hands and he will bowl the first over of the day. Shaun Marsh and Travis Head at the crease for the hosts.

Michael Clarke’s two cents on the situation
Former Australian skipper Clarke tells the official broadcasters that Australia still have a chance to get a positive result in the game. He reckons that Marsh needs to play a big innings while skipper Tim Paine is also capable of holding his own at the crease. But Sunil Gavaskar feels that India have done enough to win the match.

Indian players warming up
All eyes will be on Indian bowlers R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma. While Ashwin and Shami have scalped two wickets each in the innings, the onus will be on Bumrah and Ishant to shine on the final day. But it could be Ashwin’s turn that could clinch the match for India on the final day.

Perfect conditions for cricket
The sun is shining bright at the venue and the conditions seems to be perfect for cricket in Adelaide. Only time will tell if India will go onto clich an emphatic win or the hosts will keep them at the bay. As things stand, the visitors have their noses ahead in the match.

Shaun Marsh key for Aussies
Australia will hope the number four can bring his Sheffield Shield form on day five, having scored an unbeaten 163 as Western Australia chased down 313 in the fourth innings to beat South Australia in the most recent match at the venue.
04:00 hrs ISTHistory against Australia
Australia will need to defy history to chase down the total and survive the wiles of Ashwin on a fifth day pitch. The highest successful run chase was in 1902, when the hosts scored 315 for six to beat England. Since the second World War, no team has bettered West Indies’ 239 for five to defeat Australia by five wickets in 1982.
03:45 hrs ISTHello and welcome
A very warm welcome to the live blog of the fifth day of the first Test between India and Australia in Adelaide. India need just six wickets to win the opening Test of the four-match series. While as for the hosts, they need to keep the visitors as bay for an entire day or score 219 more runs.
