India get wicket at the end

Ravichandran Ashwin shares the new ball with Shami, making this the first time since 1967 that an Indian spinner has taken the new ball since Bishan Singh Bedi did so at the same venue in 1967 and he removes Alaistair Cook to end the day! England end Day 2 ahead by 22 runs.

England start strong

Mohammed Shami’s first over is a decent one except for one bad ball down the leg side that swings so much it goes for four byes. England are 4/0 after the 1st over.

India all out for 274

OUT! Virat Kohli somehow gets out to a ball that deserved to be hammered to the boundary and India are all out for 274. England lead by 13 runs. But what an innings this has been from Virat. Class all around.

Kohli leads from the front

Since the fall of the eighth wicket, Kohli has faced 77% of the deliveries and scored 88% of the runs. The 50-run partnership for the 10th wicket is also up. India are 268/9 after 75 overs.

IND lessen deficit

The lead that England has continues to get less at this point. India are 253/9 after 72 overs and are behind by 34 runs.

Kohli eyes more runs

The hundred is out of the way but Kohli doesn’t look like he’s ready to give in any time soon. India are 243/9 after 70 overs.

India trail by 50

At the end of the 68th over India are 237/9, exactly 50 runs behind England’s target. Can they somehow get a lead or even lessen the deficit further?

Kohli gets 100

And Kohli brings up his maiden Test hundred in England with a boundary! What an innings this has been. He looked shaky to begin with but he rode out the rough patch and - with some luck and assistance from England’s fielders - has now reached a milestone he is likely to never forget. India are 227/9 in 66 overs.

Ishant could have reviewed

Replays showed the ball was in fact missing the leg stump. Oh dear! India are 217/9 after 64 overs. Also, Jos Buttler is back on the field.

Third time unlucky for Ishant

OUT! The change in bowling works as Adil Rashid removes Ishant Sharma. It’s a wonderful wrong un and Ishant didn’t pick it, duly getting trapped in front of the stumps. The decision was an easy one to make and he didn’t even review the decision. India 217/9 after 63.4 overs.

Kohli into 90s

Virat Kohli has entered the nervy 90s now. A century in this match will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the best knocks of his career. India are 211/8 after 62 overs.

India steady

Ishant Sharma survived again when he was given out on Anderson’s bowling but successfully reviewed. He will look to survive as of now and Kohli should look to attack when he can. India are 205/8 after 60 overs.

Virat breaks shackles

Kohli’s definitely played a very reserved innings for the most part but he hits two wonderful back-to-back boundaries off Curran. The first one is a wristy flick through mid-wicket and the other is a late shot that he gently dabs past the slip fielders. 200’s up for India and Kohli is now in the 80s. India are 203/8 after 58 overs.

Kohli solid

Kohli enters the 70s now. It is imperative he scores a big one today if India are to have any hope of actually posting a good total in the first innings. They are 187/8 after 56 overs.

Ishant survives scare

Ishant Sharma, the new man in, is given out LBW but instantly reviews. He got a fair bit of bat on that so the decision is rightfully reversed. That would have been a big blow for India.

Shami departs

OUT! James Anderson now removes Mohammed Shami and it is Dawid Malan of all people who hangs on to a catch in the slips. He looks relieved. Meanwhile, India are now 8 wickets down.

Kohli holds fort

Virat Kohli is the key man for India at this point and he is looking solid. However, he needs someone to stick around with him. Mohammed Shami, ideally, needs to rotate the strike and ensure Kohli faces the lions share of deliveries at this point. India are 182/7 after 53 overs.

Anderson removes Ashwin

OUT! James Anderson with a beautiful delivery to remove R Ashwin! Ashwin had his stumps covered and Anderson still managed to rattle them. Nothing much Ashwin could have done there; that was a beauty.

Kohli steady

Kohli gets a somewhat streaky four to end the first innings after the break. You can read all about the records he broke with his half century here. Meanwhile, ICC have tweeted the following on Jos Buttler; it’s good news for England.

India 160/6 at tea

That’s the end of the second session and India are at 160/6. It’s not an ideal position to be in but the fact that Kohli is still alive and kicking - thanks in no small part to Dawid Malan’s generosity - will give India hope. Can they kick on in the final session? We shall find out soon enough.

Kohli gets maiden fifty in England

FIFTY FOR KOHLI! It’s been a shaky but gritty innings from the Indian skipper. He’s had his share of luck and he looked uneasy out in the middle to start with. He has now become the 5th Indian skipper to score a half-century in his first innings as a captain in England.

Curran gets Pandya

WICKET! Sam Curran removes Hardik Pandya and India are in a bit of trouble now! Curran with a good full ball that catches Pandya by surprise and hits him in the shoe almost. Umpire gives him out and not even a review saves him.

Kohli nears 50

Virat Kohli has now scored his highest Test score in England. He would now look to convert that into a fifty. Pandya, meanwhile, remains solid. India are 143/5 after 44 overs.

Pandya steady

Hardik Pandya, after surviving a few scares initially, has settled down well and is looking a lot more comfortable out in the middle. That is exactly what India need at this point. India 134/5 after 42 overs.

Kohli hits back

The Indian skipper has been extremely patient this far and now he finally cuts loose. Broad is hit for two boundaries in his eighth over. India are 126/5 in 39 overs.

Pandya deals in edges

Two consecutive boundaries and both of them came out of Hardik Pandya’s edges. Ben Stokes is getting a lot of swing off the pitch but unfortunately, the ball is not finding the fielders. Virat Kohli, on the other end, continue to play sensibly as India are 113 for the loss of five wickets.

England ‘slip’ up

Two consecutive chances and two misses from England at slips. Dawid Malan was unable to dismiss Virat Kohli at second slip and in the next over, Hardik Pandya was dropped by Alastair Cook in the slip cauldron once again. The duo is living quite dangerously at the moment! IND 100-5

Almost six down

Ben Stokes almost had his third wicket as he trapped Hardik Pandya LBW but the review showed that the ball was missing the leg-stump. This has been a near perfect session for England till now and with 100 Test wickets under his name, Stokes is looking lethal at the moment. India are 100 for the loss of five wickets.

Stokes strikes, Karthik departs

Ben Stokes strikes again! Dinesh Karthik was castled for a duck as India are struggling at 100/5. A straight ball with a slight seam movement and Karthik made a total mess of it. The ball crashed into the middle stumps and this is getting worse for the visitors. Can Kohli fight back? India 100-5

Rahane out

What a reckless shot by Ajinkya Rahane as he edges the delivery from just outside the off-stump and Keaton Jennings at third slip made no mistake in completing the catch. 100 came up for India in the same over but this wicket by Ben Stokes will be a huge blow to the visitors. India 100/4

Curran’s record

Sam Curran is the youngest England bowler to claim 3 wickets in England in Tests. Previously, this achievement belonged to James Anderson who did it against Zimbabwe in 2003. India 96-3

Kohli living dangerously

Virat Kohli edges the ball to the slip fielders but it was just short and a lucky boundary for the Indian skipper. The same thing happended in the next over and this is tense stuff for Kohli as he is looking to get his concentration back after the break. India 92/3

Buttler out of the series?

Jos Buttler has gone to the hospital with a broken finger and he can be potentially out of the series. India have started cautiously in the second session and they are looking to build the innings slowly. India 89/3

Lunch on Day 2

It’s lunch on Day 2. India are 76/3 with Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane at the crease. Sam Curran took all the three wickets for hosts. This was a mixed session for India as they started really well but Curran made sure that England have an equally productive outing. This partnership will be key for India’s chances in this game and these two batsmen will have to play well to guide the visitors to safety. India 76/3

Curran Carnage

Sam Curran has been on fire for England and with the slightly old ball, he is doing wonders for the hosts. The pair of Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan were going great guns but the quick wickets have brought the visitors back into the game. Can he get more wickets in this session? India 62 for the loss of three wickets.

Dhawan out, Curran takes three

Sam Curran, what a spell! Third wicket for the youngster as Shikhar Dhawan edges the delivery to Dawid Malan in second slip for 26 and this is going horribly wrong for India. Can Rahane and Virat Kohli lead the fight back or it will be all England from now? India struggling on 59 for the loss of 3 wickets.

Big test for Kohli

Virat Kohli is the new batsman for India and this is going to be the main test for the Indian cricket team skipper. Kohli struggled to make an impact when India last toured England in 2014, scoring 134 runs in 10 innings, but has since emerged as one of the most reliable batsmen in the world across all three formats of the game. England were quick to respond as James Anderson is back into the attack. Who will win the battle? India 55/2

Curran strikes again

Sam Curran strikes again! KL Rahul is bowled out for 4 and India are 54 for the loss of two wickets. KL Rahul got a boundary but the next ball, he mis-timed the delivery completely and the ball crashed into the stumps. This is not going well for India!

Vijay departs

First wicket goes down for India as Murali Vijay is dismissed by Sam Curran for 20. It was a straight delivery from Curran and Vijay was unable to connect properly. The ball crashed into the pads and although Aleem Dar gave it not out, the DRS showed that the ball was hitting the leg stump. India are 50 for the loss of one wicket.

50 up for India

50 comes up for India in 11.1 overs. This has been the perfect start for India and Virat Kohli could not have asked for anything more. Dhawan and Vijay are in top form and the 50-run partnership will be a huge boost to both of them.

This has been a perfect session for India till now. Shami got the last wicket early and the openers - Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan - are looking solid against the England pacers. The two batsmen have not taken any unnecessary risks and if they can stay till lunch, this will be a huge boost to the visitors. India 44 for no loss.

Dhawan on fire

Shikhar Dhawan gets another boundary down the leg-side and this is the perfect start for India. James Anderson and Stuart Broad have not enjoyed much help from the pitch and this is an easy outing for the Indian openers. 9 overs gone. India are 40 for no loss.

Rashid the key?

India’s gamble to bring Ravichandran Ashwin early into the attack worked wonders on Day 1 as he took the wicket of Alastair Cook. Will England do something similar with Adil Rashid? India 26-0

Dhawan confident

Shikhar Dhawan is looking in good touch as he is rotating the strike easily against James Anderson and Stuart Broad. A lot of questions were asked after his inclusion for the first Test match but a confident performance here can shut his critics down for some time. He has taken a special shining to Broad and he easily drove the England international for a boundary through the covers. India 23 for the loss of no wicket.

Solid start

Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan have started the innings brilliantly with positive stroke play. Stuart Broad strayed in his line slightly and Vijay slammed it through the covers. A LBW appeal against Vijay but the DRS review went against England. 3 overs gone, England are 13 for no loss.

India’s bowling depth coming to the fore

Arnab Sen, Sports Editor, HT Digital: There was a lot of talk about the depth in India’s bowling attack even before the start of the Test match and that has come to the fore in the first innings. Despite the absence of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, the trio of Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami put their hand up and did the job for the team. And of course how can one forget the stellar performance of Ravichandran Ashwin. For me this was perhaps his best ever bowling performance in his Test career. Yes, he has picked up a lot more wickets while playing in India but the confidence with which he bowled at a time when there was so much negativity around him and whether he should play ahead of Kuldeep Yadav, makes this performance special.

Dhawan, Vijay start proceedings

Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan are the openers for India while James Anderson is bowling the first over. Anderson strays in line and Dhawan is off the mark with three runs on the leg-side. India 4-0.

That’s it for England! Mohammed Shami dismisses Sam Curran as England are bowled out for 287. Curran ended up edging the delivery off Shami and this time, Dinesh Karthik made no mistakes behind the stumps. This is the perfect start for India and now, the onus is completely on the batsmen.

Nervy start

Ravichandran Ashwin almost struck with the fourth ball of the day but James Anderson’s shot was inches away from his own off-stump. The tail-enders are not looking confident against Ashwin and India need to wrap up this innings as soon as possible. England 287-9

Almost time

We are five minutes away from the start of Day 2. India are in the driver’s seat but a first innings of 300 will not be the worst thing to happen for England. They started the game well and a disciplined bowling performance from James Anderson and his partners can change the encounter of its head.

Pitch Report

Here’s what Sanjay Manjrekar had to say about the pitch on Day 2 - “Not a lot has changed. It is a pitch where you’d see a lot of soft dismissals with batsmen getting out to seemingly innocuous deliveries. To extract something out of this for the bowlers is going to be a challenge, especially on days two and three, and the Indian batsmen must ensure that they put their head down and make use of these conditions.”

Final wicket

The sunny conditions and the pitch will be helpful to the bowlers once again while the old ball should be enough for the Indian bowlers to get the job done. 300 will be a major boost for England and Ishant Sharma & Co will be looking to take that final wicket as soon as possible. England 285-9

Ashwin’s record

The spin did assist the spinners at Edgbaston and Ravichandran Ashwin benefitted a lot from the help. Ashwin (4/60) registered his best figures in Test cricket across South Africa, England and Australia as the hosts lost six wickets for 69 runs in the final session of play to find themselves in a precarious position after opting to bat.

Sleepy Shastri

A funny incident on Day 1 took place when the television cameras captured Ravi Shastri taking a nap in the Indian dressing room and commentator Harbhajan Singh did not miss the chance to mock the Indian cricket team head coach.“Ravi Shastri having a nap there. Wake up, Ravi!” said Harbhajan as other commentators around him burst into a laugh.

Dropped chances

India could have wrapped up the England innings much earlier if they could hold on to the chances. The first mistake came early in the match as Ajinkya Rahane spilled a catch in fourth slip and the other big chance came towards the end of the day when Dinesh Karthik was unable to take a diving catch when Sam Curran edged a Mohammed Shami delivery.

Jennings on back foot

Keaton Jennings came for the press conference earlier and he denied India held the upper hand. “Everybody is entitled to celebrate how they want to. He celebrated, and that’s cool,” Jennings told the media when asked about Virat Kohli’s send-off. “You look, after 85 overs with an old ball, there still seems to be quite a lot of lateral movement. From our point of view, we’ve got (nearly) 300 on the board – and if we can come out and be pretty relentless in the way we go about hitting our areas, at some point tomorrow…, you don’t actually know what a good score is until both sides have batted.”

Joe Root the saviour

Joe Root was the star for England as he was the top-scorer with 80. Root, along with wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow, steered the home side away from danger as they partnered a 100-run stand between them to shift the momentum and the control of the match back England’s way.

Amazing Ashwin

Ravichandran Ashwin was the wrecker-in-chief for India as he took four wickets on Day 1. Ashwin’s 25-over spell was the most by any of the five Indian bowlers and his economy rate of 2.40 the least as well. The tall spinner dealt the big blow into the ninth over, handing India their first wicket of the series and then followed it up with three crucial wickets in the last session.

VIrat Kohli’s ‘mic drop’

A controversial moment of Day 1 came when Virat Kohli gave Joe Root a send-off after dismissing the England skipper. The dismissal was a crucial one for the Indian cricket team at that juncture and Kohli mocked Root by blowing a kiss and mimicking his ‘mic drop’ celebration. Kohli’s ‘mic drop’ gesture was the imitation of Root’s celebration after he scored his second consecutive hundred to clinch the ODI series for the hosts.
