Ravichandran Ashwin has done it. He gets Ben Stokes for 30. That is a massive wicket for India, just when it looked like the game was getting away from them. England 178/6 , lead by 151 runs.

21:05 pm IST

India out of reviews

India have wasted both their reviews. India appeal for a caught behind but there is nothing according to the ultraedge. India must be hoping that there are no blunders from the umpires. 50 partnership up between Stokes and Buttler.

20:55 pm IST

20:12 hrs IST

Tea on Day 3

India need wickets in the final session and need to finish the innings quickly if they wish to stay alive in this game. The score reads 152/5 with Buttler on 22 and Stokes on 20, England lead by 125.

20:02 hrs IST

Shami looking to reverse

Shami is bowling his heart out along with Ashwin. Both the bowlers have bowled their heart out as both Buttler and Stokes have looked very patient in their approach here. Not taking any undue chance here and waiting for the bad balls. India need one wicket before the break.

19:52 hrs IST

Indian bowlers keep trying

It has been a tough grind for the Indian bowlers here as the English batsmen have shown great determination here and grinded it out here. India need quick wickets here because they have to bat last on this wicket and that is not the best situation considering the amount of turn that Moeen Ali got in the first innings.

19:42 hrs IST

Buttler & Stokes frustrate Indians

Jos Buttler has joined Ben Stokes at the fall of Root’s wicket and the two have been looking to score only off the bad balls and not taken any risks here. England know the need to bat big here and put up a good total on the board. The lead has just crossed 100 and the hosts have just 5 wickets left in the bag.

19:32 hrs IST

India looking for wickets

Having dismissed Root against the run of play, the bowlers are now looking at some quick wickets before the tea break as India will have to bat last in this game. Any total in excess of 200 will be difficult to chase down here as the ball will be turning as well as moving around.

19:22 hrs IST

Shami runs out Root

Just the moment India needed on the field as England skipper Joe Root has been run out against the run of play here. Root goes for 48 as Shami hit the wickets direct. India have once again sniffed an opportunity here and they are elated.

18:56 hrs IST

Stokes and Root look to consolidate

Root has been playing an intelligent knock here and has ensured that he waits for the bad balls. Stokes too has looked to be cautious in his approach as England look to bat well in this innings. India need wickets here and quick. The lead is nearing the three-figure mark here.

18:46 hrs IST

Root holds ground

Even as India have tried their best to get wickets, Root has played a captain’s knock here so far for England. He has quietly moved into the 40s and is looking to keep things tight here. No flashy shots and waiting for the bad balls. He knows the importance of staying put at the crease and scoring runs here.

18:36 hrs IST

India look for wickets

With Stokes still fresh at the crease, India are looking to quickly pick a couple more wickets and get into the lower middle-order. Kohli is looking to use Bumrah and Shami to get him the wickets here. The lead is nearing a 100 for England and they must bat long here and in fact bat India out of the game.

18:26 hrs IST

Stokes joins Root

The England skipper has been joined by all-rounder Ben Stokes and the two will now look to build a partnership here as the lead looks to get bigger. Anything over 250 will be difficult to chase down for India in the fourth innings. Still a long way to go for that score, but India must pick wickets.

18:16 hrs IST

Shami strikes again

Shami has done it on either side of the lunch break. First sends back Jennings before the lunch break and then dismisses Bairstow off the first ball after the lunch interval. What a start for India as the score reads 92/4. India will need more wickets to stay alive in this game as the lead reads 65.

17:30 hrs IST

Shami gets Jennings at stroke of lunch

Shami has given India a wicket at the stroke of lunch as Jennings has to walk back for 36. Root is unbeaten on 30 as the players walk back for lunch. The score reads 92/3. India will need more wickets to stay alive in this game as the lead reads 65 for England.

17:20 hrs IST

Root and Jennings looking good

With just 10 minutes to go for the lunch break, the Indians would ideally want one more wicket here. Shami is bowling a good spell and the Indians want to break this partnership as both Root and Jennings are looking confident in the middle. India need wickets, England need these two to bat long.

17:10 hrs IST

Kohli wants Root to stay away from danger zone

Kohli take a look at Root’s follow through after he plays a shot and Root has a smile on his face. But the England skipper is actually following on in his shot and stepping into the danger zone. Must stay away as India will have to bat last on this wicket.

17:00 hrs IST

Root and Jennings build partnership

Joe Root and Jennings have done well to stitch together a partnership here after England lost Cook and Moeen Ali early in the first hour. India will ideally want one more wicket before the lunch break. It will not be easy to bat last on this wicket and India will be looking to keep it tight. The score reads 66/2

16:50 hrs IST

India lose a review

Poor call for a review as Bumrah hits Root on the pads. Root was playing on the backfoot and he was on his toes when the ball hit the top of the pad. This was an unwanted call here as the players would have seen that the ball was hitting Root high. India looking for one more wicket before the lunch break here.

16:44 hrs IST

Bumrah trying to break Jennings’ resistance

Jennings has played out more than 50 balls here and India will want to send him back at the earliest. Kohli wants Bumrah to once again get one to come in sharply after pitching and catch the left-hander plumb in front. Bumrah has bowled a testing line so far. England looking to build on the lead.

16:34 hrs IST

Ishant gets second warning

Landing on the danger zone sees Ishant being given a second warning by the umpire. Ishant is not too happy with the verdict, but replays show that the second landing is inside the zone. Goes round the wicket now. Ishant will have to be cautious here and cannot step into the danger zone again as he will then be barred from bowling in this innings anymore.

16:21 hrs IST

Ishant gets Moeen

Moeen’s stay at the crease ends here as Ishant gets a beauty to take the edge and Rahul takes a brilliant catch at second slip. Moeen goes for 9 after reviews show that Rahul had his fingers below the ball. Rahul takes another quality catch as the score reads 33/2

16:15 hrs IST

Moeen looking to get scoreboard moving

In a surprise move, Root has sent in Moeen Ali at No.3. He is looking to rotate the strike and put the bowlers off their mark. England have taken the lead and India need to pick a couple of wickets before the lunch break. This will be an interesting hour and 15 minutes before the break.

16:04 hrs IST

Bumrah gets Cook

That quality line outside the off and Bumrah gets Cook. The opener edges that and Rahul makes no mistake in the slip cordon. The Indians are celebrating as Cook goes for 12. England still trail by 3 runs as the score reads 24/1

15:50 hrs IST

Line an issue with Indian bowlers

Ashwin and Ishant have been releasing the pressure by bowling bad balls in every over. They need to be a lot more tighter to ensure that the new ball does not go waste. Jennings and Cook are looking determined here and would want to bat through the session and give England a good lead going into the break.

15:40 hrs IST

India looking for wickets

Kohli has made his intentions very clear here as he is using two of his best bowlers on the tour here on the third morning. While Ashwin started the show, Ishant has been handed the ball with the spinner. Bumrah waits in the wings and will surely be up next. India need a couple of wickets going before the lunch break here.

15:30 hrs IST

Ashwin starts proceedings

Kohli brings Ashwin into the game from the word go. India want early wickets and Kohli has handed the ball to Ashwin and he is bowling from the same end that Moeen was bowling from. The English batsmen will look to first erase the deficit here before building on a good lead.

15:20 hrs IST

Pujara shows the way

Cheteshwar Pujara is not anywhere remotely close to the modern brand of cricket, in fact, he is so out of place that he loses his place quite so often. Cheteshwar Pujara is picked at, Pujara is often looked at with scorn, with doubts, with furrowed eyebrows -- and yet Cheteshwar Pujara is resolute. It’s all in the mind, it’s what he thinks he is, and he is free... when in stoic defence, he is free, when not chasing ball outside that off stump, he is free, when in his own bubble chastising himself for that lazy waft, he is free. Pujara scored a century, remained unbeaten, led the team out - that very moment was his crowning glory. Pujara is just what Test cricket is all about, Pujara is what Test cricket misses in the contemporary hullaballoo of intent!

15:10 hrs IST

Milestone man

Virat Kohli’s status as India’s premier batsman across all formats is undisputed and he added another feather in his cap on Friday, when he went past the 6000-run mark in Test cricket on day 2 of the fourth Test against England at Southampton. Kohli reached the milestone in his 119th innings, which makes him the ninth fastest in Test history. He is also the second fastest Indian to the mark after Sunil Gavaskar. The former India captain had taken 117 innings to complete 6000 runs in Tests. The record for the fastest to the mark belongs to cricket’s original run machine, Sir Donald Bradman. The Australian legend had completed the mark in an astounding 68 innings. Banned Australian batsman Steven Smith and former West Indies great Gary Sobers occupy the second spot, having reached the mark in 111 Test innings. Kohli has beaten greats like Sachin Tendulkar and Vivian Richards to the milestone. Both Tendulkar and Richards took 120 innings to complete 6000 Test runs. The Indian captain is also nearing 10,000 runs in one-day internationals and has also crossed the 2000-runs mark in T20 internationals.

15:00 hrs IST

Moeen Ali back with a bang

Moeen Ali was dumped from the national squad after a poor Ashes series, where he also struggled with a finger injury. He was recalled after an all-round show for his county, scoring a double century and taking eight wickets. “I’ve loved being back at Worcester, having a good stint there, just getting form back with bat and ball. I’ve really enjoyed going back to county cricket and having a bit of a break,” said the 31-year-old. “It’s always nice to get a call-up when you’re in decent nick with bat and ball — you have that confidence coming into the game, and it’s doing what county cricket should be doing.” The 31-year-old returned to a venue where he took eight wickets and shone in India’s big defeat. “I was bowling from the same end; it brings back those memories – it’s always nice to have that in the back of your mind. The spin was nice, and it did last time as well. After my first over today, I thought I was going to be in the game throughout this Test. The role in the side now is my best – mainly as a batter, then coming on as a second spinner gives me a lot more confidence and freedom, and I actually end up playing better. We’re going to have to fight hard to win this series here, but I hope we can do that. I think Ravi (Ashwin) is going to be hard work for us this innings, but I’m sure we’ve got the quality in the side that can deal with it.”

14:50 hrs IST

Pujara does a tweak

India batting coach Sanjay Bangar said Pujara had technical issues but had rectified them. “Right from where he got in to play at Lord’s to how he batted in Nottingham and whatever he did out here, he showed a lot of composure, clarity of thought and great discipline in his judgement outside off,” he said on Friday evening, as the batsman was too exhausted to talk to the media after a six-hour knock. “Birmingham is too much in the past,” he said when asked about his omission for the first Test. “He was coming off a rough patch and also he hadn’t really scored as many runs as he’d have liked in the last 10-11 innings for India.”
