There is no guessing there (about where they lost), the last 4 four overs that we bowled was just unacceptable. We needed to be more clever, nothing came off and we just cracked under pressure. That’s been our story this season so far. If you bowl with not enough bravery in the crucial overs, it’s always going to be difficult against power-hitters like Russell. I wasn’t really happy getting out at that moment, could’ve got 20-25 more. AB didn’t get much strike in the end. I thought the runs were enough on the board, we didn’t have enough composure. But if you can’t defend 75 in the last four overs, then I don’t know if you can defend 100. We can have a bit of chat about what went wrong, apart from that nothing much you can say. I don’t think talking enough helps all the time. You need to give the guys some space and come back stronger in the next game. It’s been a disappointing season so far, but we are still optimistic about our chances. We just have to believe in ourselves that we can turn things around.

Pitch report

The pitch seems like a regular Bangalore pitch where runs will flow aplenty. Brendon McCullum tells the official broadcasters that it looks like a pitch where scoring 170 180 won’t be diffcult. However, he himself thinks that the teams should go past the 200-run mark easily considering the players two teams have in their ranks.

Chahal wants consistent playing XI

“The tournament isn’t so long, so you need to think on your feet on what the best XIs are. We will sit down and talk to see how we can balance our team and allow our players to create some match-winning performances. We still have 10 games and we have a chance of coming back. If we think negative, then no point playing. So we need to be positive.”

19:08 hrs IST

Russell to create havoc again?

This season has been all about Andre Russell - with the bat and ball. As KKR get ready to face RCB, his numbers against Virat Kohli’s side should worry the home fans. He strikes the ball at 201.92 against Royal Challengers Bangalore, which is second best against all the IPL teams. He has scored 78.10 % runs from boundaries against RCB which is 3rd best after Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab. Currently, he is the fourth best batsman this season with an average of 79.5. As far as strike rate is concerned, Russell with 188.40 has the best strike rate for KKR in the IPL. He is now nine runs shy from completing 1000 runs for KKR. With the ball, he is just two wickets away from completing 50 wickets in the IPL for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

19:00 hrs IST

Chawla still wary of RCB

“We all know what type of game RCB has got and four games down doesn’t mean that they are down and out. We know the quality of players they have, they are going to bounce back. They will come even more hard at us. We have to prepare in that way and play some good cricket to beat them,” Piyush Chawla said ahead of match against RCB.

18:54 hrs IST

ABD’s poor record

AB de Villiers averages 24.92 against KKR in 18 matches - the lowest for him against any opponent. AB has struggled to pick the googly which could make Dinesh Karthik toss to the ball to either Piyush Chawla or Sunil Narine when the South African takes strike. He’s been out to the off break or googly in the three games so far, and has a strike-rate of only 100 against spinners this season. Also, he averages only 5.60 against the googly and 9.75 against the off break, a trend Karthik should exploit.

18:48 hrs IST

RCB predicted XI

Tim Southee should be given a game to shore up the bowling options, while Washington Sundar can be used in the powerplay with the ball and then could be given the license to open the innings and express himself. Likely XI - Parthiv Patel (wk), Washington Sundar, Virat Kohli (c), AB de Villiers, Shimron Hetmyer, Marcus Stoinis, Akshdeep Nath, Umesh Yadav, Tim Southee, Mohammad Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal

18:42 hrs IST

KKR predicted XI

On the eve of the clash, Piyush Chawla revealed Sunil Narine is good to go and he will replace Nikhil Naik at the top of the order. The rest of the side should remain the same as Dinesh Karthik does not believe in tweaking his team too much. Likely XI: Sunil Narine, Chris Lynn, Robin Uthappa, Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik (wk, c), Shubman Gill, Andre Russell, Piyush Chawla, Kuldeep Yadav, Lockie Ferguson, Prasidh Krishna

18:36 hrs IST

Player battle: Kuldeep vs Hetmyer

Hetmyer came into this IPL with a lot of expectations but has not been able to translate them into performances so far. However, he has the talent and the game to dominate the spinners which could make Kohli give him an extended rope. The left-hander dominated Kuldeep Yadav in the ODI series against India and RCB would hope for more of the same in this match.

18:30 hrs IST

Player battle: Uthappa vs Chahal

Over the past seasons, Chahal has bowled 30 deliveries to Robin Uthappa and has conceded 39 runs. He has dismissed him once which makes this battle a balanced one and hence, both players would be keen to walk away with bragging rights once the match ends.

18:24 hrs IST

Player battle: Karthik vs Umesh

Dinesh Karthik has been a fine batsman for KKR over the last couple of seasons. He has the game to adapt according to the situation and this is where he holds the key in the middle order. His record against Umesh Yadav is remarkable and has dominated RCB’s pace spearhead. Karthik has faced 32 balls from Umesh Yadav and has smoked 60 runs at a strike rate of 187.50.

18:18 hrs IST

Player battle - de Villiers vs Chawla

AB de Villiers has struggled to pick the googly this season and his record against Piyush Chawla is not entirely flattering. He averages 24.92 against KKR in 18 matches - the lowest for him against any opponent. Against Piyush Chawla, the numbers are quite dismal. He has scored only 45 runs in 46 balls and has been dismissed 4 times over the season.

18:12 hrs IST

Player battle - Kohli vs Narine

Piyush Chawla informed on the eve of the match that Sunil Narine is fit and good to go and Dinesh Karthik will toss the ball to him as soon as Virat Kohli takes guard. Kohli has managed to score only 73 runs in 76 balls from Sunil Narine and has perished twice to the West Indian. This battle in the powerplay overs could well determine the course of this match.

18:06 hrs IST

Russell factor makes KKR favourite

Though KKR lost their last game by 3 runs in Super Over against Delhi Capitals, their confidence level is still high with their batsmen, including Nitish Rana, Andre Russell, Robin Uthappa and Shubhman Gill, being in top form. Russell has been in sensational form with his incredible power-hitting ability that helped KKR win two matches. Restricting him will be a challenge for Chahal and company.

18:00 hrs IST

Bowling not up to mark either

The bowling department has also been disappointing. Apart from Yuzvendra Chahal, all the other RCB bowlers have not been among wickets and have conceded far too many runs in death overs. RCB will have to completely turn their fortunes around in order to eke out a victory against Dinesh Karthik’s troops, who will be eying their third win of the season.

17:54 hrs IST

Milestones for superstar duo

Despite their struggling form, Kohli and de Villiers are nearing personal milestones. Kohli is 17 runs away from becoming the second Indian cricketer after Suresh Raina to complete 8,000 T20 runs and de Villiers 15 runs short of becoming the second highest T20 run-scorer for RCB. He has 3,406 runs under his belt.

17:48 hrs IST

Bangalore’s batting collapses

Against Chennai Super Kings, RCB were bowled out for a paltry 70 in 17.1 overs after their top-order crumbled before the bowling of Harbhajan Singh and Imran Tahir. Against Sunrisers Hyderabad, RCB collapsed to an embarrassing 35 for 6 in the eighth over, with Kohli and de Villiers contributing just four runs between them. Against Rajasthan Royals too, RCB top order failed, except Parthiv who scored a half century.

17:42 hrs IST

Batting problems for RCB

Batting collapse is the biggest worrying factor for RCB and to made matters worse captain Kohli’s form has not been up to the mark by his high standards. He has managed a below 20 average in four games. Parthiv Patel and AB de Villiers are the only batsmen who have above 20 average.

17:36 hrs IST

Head to head

Last Royal Challengers Bangalore win against Kolkata Knight Riders was in May 2016 at Eden Gardens and since, they have suffered defeats in their three encounters against the Kolkata-based side at Chinnaswamy Stadium. Overall, the two teams have clashed 22 times with KKR winning 13 matches and RCB winning 9. It is not just current form but also previous records which states that KKR are more likely to come out victorious from this clash.

17:30 hrs IST
