In light of injuries sustained by Sachin Tendulkar and Anil Kumble during the on-going Test series against South Africa, the secretary of the Indian cricket board told HT over phone from Rajkot: “We should take care of them. They have minimum two or three years to give Indian cricket and youngsters will benefit from their guidance. They cannot compete with youngsters.”

Shah said that the senior players should pick and choose the matches they want to play so that their experience and solidity don’t go waste. “Everybody has to realise that he is ageing. They should decide how much they want to play. They have so much experience that they know their body better than anybody else,” he added.

The selectors also have an important role in this, said Shah. “The selectors must have direct dialogues with the seniors. We must prepare a second line and give them enough chances.”
