Preview: Sri Lanka and West Indies will both be playing for pride as they take on each other in the ICC World Cup 2019 at Chester-le-Street. The 20-run win over hosts England pumped life into Sri Lanka’s campaign before a nine-wicket loss against South Africa jeopardised their chances but India’s loss against the hosts meant that their semi-final dreams were well and truly over. Sri Lanka are placed seventh on the points table with six points from seven matches. The Jason Holder-led West Indies, on the other hand, have managed just one win from seven outings while one match was washed out. With only three points in their kitty, the two-time former champions have nothing to lose and will aim to finish on a high and spoil Sri Lanka’s slim chances of advancing to the semifinals.Follow Live Score Sri Lanka vs West Indies, ICC World Cup 2019 here -

Pitch report

“Bowling from the Lumley end, the left boundary is 64m, to the right, it’s 79 meters and with the wind. Cover is 81m. From the Finchale end, long straight boundaries - 80+ meters. It’s a tufty surface - drip wit the new ball, the seam will hold up a little. It won’t turn too much, but it’ll grip on the seam. If you bowl well, you’ll get some assistance even though bowling into the wind is going to be difficult” - Simon Doull with the pitch analysis and Ian Bishop with the ground dimensions.

Mashrafe will bounce back

The Bangladesh skipper came into the tournament after having suffered a hamstring injury that he sustained in the tri-nation series in Ireland. “Wickets are not the key thing and well he has not got enough wickets as we know,” said Walsh on Sunday (June 30). “He is playing well and bowling good. I am sure the wickets will come. I am not really concerned about having wickets. I am more concerned about keeping them tight and doing my job.”

Suranga Lakmal vs Shai Hope

Suranga Lakmal is having a poor tournament as he still is searching for his first wicket in the tournament. With Nuwan Pradeep ruled out due to chickenpox, Lakmal is likely to play for Sri Lanka and he will be hopeful of getting West Indies’ best batsman, which is Shai Hope. The batsman has not been able to score too many runs in the tournament, but seems to be the only batsman who does not get carried away and play risky shots. In Hope, lies Windies hope.

Isuru Udana vs Shimron Hetmyer

Isuru Udana has been the pick of Sri Lanka’s bowler and Shimron Hetmyer will face a stiff challenge when he faces the left-armer.The angle created by Udana to a left-handed batsman will be a critical factor that will make this contest interesting between the two players. Hetmyer has been off to starts in this tournament but has failed to convert it big, playing some silly shots. On his day, he can be a dangerous opponent.

Jason Holder vs Avishka Fernando

West Indies captain Jason Holder will be under pressure when he gets the ball against Sri Lanka. Avishka Fernando has been brilliant for Sri Lanka with the bat in the two games he has played, and he will be eager to target the skipper. Holder has struggled to get wickets, and Fernando, who enjoys batting against fast bowlers, will hope to get away with runs in his overs.

Kemar Roach vs Kusal Mendis

Kemar Roach was the pick of the bowler for Windies against India and he would be the key player for Windies.Sri Lanka players struggle against extra pace and bounce, and Kemar Roach can vary his speed. Kusal Mendis, who is not enjoying a good tournament so far at the moment, will be eager to turn things around and face off Roach threat tactically. He forms the core of Sri Lanka’s middle order and Roach will target him with every ball.

Chris Gayle vs Lasith Malinga

The biggest battle on the cards will be between Chris Gayle and Lasith Malinga. The bowler has been in tremendous wicket-taking form in the tournament, and he would look to topple Windies top order with the new ball. The dismissal of Chris Gayle early on will put West Indies under pressure and would increase chances of another Windies collapse. Malinga has dismissed Gayle only once in his ODI career before, and he would hope to get him for the second time.

Heartbreak for SL

Dimuth Karunaratne and his Sri Lanka squad had to prepare like they’re still in contention at the Cricket World Cup.With their playoff chances hinging on India beating England at Edgbaston on Sunday, Karunaratne and his team practiced on the eve of their group game against West Indies as if there was still a playoff spot on the line. They were going through batting and fielding drills when England set India a target of 338 to win. However, their dreams were dashed as India slumped to their first loss of the tournament against England.

WI eye redemption

The West Indies are aiming to regain the confidence they started the tournament with, when its pace quartet bounced out Pakistan for 105 in an opening win and then had defending champion Australia in strife at 38-4 and 79-5. They lost a tight one to the Australians, then were on top against South Africa before that game got washed out.

Hello and welcome

Welcome to the live coverage of the ICC World Cup 2019 encounter between Sri Lanka and West Indies.

In their nine-wicket loss to South Africa, Sri Lanka’s inconsistent batting came to the fore yet again and skipper Dimuth Karunaratne would look to improve on that aspect against a challenging West Indian bowling attack.

With their batting unit misfiring more often than not, the onus to secure favourable results has always been put on the experienced bowling attack, led by veteran speedster Lasith Malinga. And with Nuwan Pradeep’s exit (due to chickenpox), Sri Lanka will rely heavily on their bowling spearhead once again.

The Jason Holder-led side, on the other hand, will look to finish on a high after being knocked out of the tournament. But, things have gone from bad to worse for the Caribbeans. They have suffered five defeats. Though they have been impressive in parts, the side has failed to hold on to their nerves in tight games and ended up enduring heartbreaking losses.
