Yohannan will take over the reins from Dav Whatmore of Australia and this will be his second time in charge of the team.

Former India quick Tinu Yohannan has been appointed the head coach of the Kerala senior men’s team, the KCA (Kerala Cricket Association) announced after making the decision during a general body meet conducted through a video conferencing on Monday. He will take over the reins from Dav Whatmore after the Australian coach signed a deal with Baroda earlier.

“It is a huge honour as well as a challenge,’’ said Tinu, who was serving as Director of KCA’s High Performance Centre in Alappuzha, as per Sportstar.

This will be Yohannan’s second stint with the team. After being roped in as Kerala’s bowling coach in 2014, Yohannan replaced P Balachandran as the team’s head coach in November of 2016 when the latter was sacked mid-season. However, four months and three matches later, Kerala signed Whatmore for the role, cutting short Yohannan’s first tenure.

Having grabbed 145 wickets from 59 First-Class games for Kerala, Yohannan is confident of performing his responsibilities as coach with elan. “I am not new to the job. I have been associated with the team as a bowling coach and assistant coach for several years. It feels great when you are made coach of a team for which you have played for 12 years,” he said.

“I know the expectations will be high especially after the poor performance last season. It is a fresh challenge but an opportunity for me. I think, since I have known all the players for many years, my job will be a little easier. I have played with senior players like Rohan Prem and Sachin Baby and against Robin Uthappa. So, I don’t think I will have any problem dealing with them.”

Son of TC Yohannan, a former Asian Games record-holder in long jump, who represented India at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, Tinu became the first player from Kerala to play Test cricket for India. He made his debut in Mohali against England in the year 2001, but played not more than three Tests and three ODIs for India, picking up five wickets in each format.
