'Virat Kohli was all over them like a cheap suit. England were spooked by India': David Lloyd on Lord's Test

Reacting to England’s defeat, Lloyd said India skipper Virat Kohli was all over the Joe Root-led side and they did not have an answer to the onslaught, they were spooked by India.

Former England batsman and now a renowned broadcaster David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd said England were ‘spooked’ by the Virat Kohli-led Indian side in the second Test match at Lord’s. In a remarkable turn of events, India, despite having their backs against the wall till the first 30 minutes of Day 5, beat England comfortably by 151 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The rain-affected first Test had ended in a draw.

“They were spooked by India in this Test and Virat Kohli was all over them like a cheap suit. They couldn't cope. So now they have to roll their sleeves up and get stuck in,” Lloyd told Daily Mail.

India’s turnaround started with an unbeaten 89-run ninth-wicket stand between bowlers Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah that took an England win out of the equation. And when India set England a target of 272 in 60 overs, their bowlers responded in grand style to bowl the hosts out for 120 in 51.5 overs.

“They will know that wasn't good enough and the coach will be telling them he expects a far better performance. Pick players with technique and then get right into India,” Lloyd said.

The Lord’s Test was filled with verbal duels and sledging between different players of both sides but many believe those incidents worked in India’s favour. They not only put in a better performance with both and ball but also got the better of England in the sledging game.

Lloyd said Kohli and Shastri knew they can get under the skin of England players.

“Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri knew they could get under England's skin. England were too meek and mild. They didn't have enough leaders to say: ''Right, we'll go right back at them.

“Think back to 2005 and that wonderful Australian team. Michael Vaughan and Duncan Fletcher told England to get stuck into them and it worked. They didn't take a backward step and that's what I'd expect now. We were wimps at Lord's!” he said.

Asked about England’s chances of making a comeback in the remaining three matches, Lloyd said they have got what it takes to hit India back.

“England have definitely got it in them to hit back. They have to! But first they have to pick the right team,” Lloyd added.

England recalled Dawid Malan and included Ollie Pope on their squad for the third Test while Dom Sibley was axed for his poor show in the first two Tests.
