Want to replace Oz in Ashes! Ze Germans must be joking
It seems Australian cricket has hit rock bottom, and there’s little sympathy. The sucker punch has been delivered from an unexpected corner. Germany has poked fun at Australia’s misery, offering to replace them as England’s Ashes foes! HT reports.
Australia’s reign at the top of world cricket lasted close to two decades. During those years of domination, the Aussies gave everyone playing catch up plenty of reasons to vilify them.
When the Aussies lost the 2005 Ashes, the world celebrated with England. Australia weren’t vilified for their domination, but for their in-your-face attitude and ruthless sledging. There was a time when Shane Warne laughed till eternity after foxing Paul Adams, a mere tail-ender.
But the Aussies loved every minute of their superiority.
Most of this animosity among fans is only natural. But it seems Australian cricket has hit rock bottom, and there’s little sympathy.
The sucker punch though has been delivered from an unexpected corner. Germany has poked fun at Australia’s misery, offering to replace them as England’s Ashes foes! The Deutscher Cricket Bund tweeted on Sunday: “#Ashes #ReturnTheUrn slightly optimistic with that hashtag chaps. If you fancy a competitive game we are only an hours flight from London.”
Now, the Germany offer is not valid for much of the cricket played in Germany is by British soldiers stationed there. Cricket in Germany though dates back to 1850 when a group of people from England and the US founded the first cricket club in Berlin. Germany are the eight ranked non-Test team in Europe.
Well, that must surely qualify them to crack a cricket joke!
