The Uttarakhand police have chalked out an intelligence plan to keep an eye on New Year rave parties where use of drugs is suspected, police said on Tuesday.
The decision has been taken in view of the past incidents of drug use during such parties in Dehradun and adjoining areas. The police had arrested 39 people on December 2012 from a rave party in Jakhan area. On January 5, 2014, 21 teenagers had been arrested from Alkapuri area with drugs and recently on September 20 this year, the police had raided a resort in Rajpur after the Veer Sawarkar Yuva Sangathan tip off that 25 youths holding a rave party.
Dehradun SP city Ajay Singh said the police were taking no chances and had already started the drive to keep an eye on suspected drug supply pockets, users and party locations through a network of informers.
Entertainment tax officials said the department had received 12 applications from city hotels and restaurants for new year bash, 13 from Mussoorie and three applications from the Rishikesh and Doiwala region.
However, police suspect that many parties might be held without permission and had set up teams to keep an eye on them across the city, Singh said.
Superintendent of police (Narcotics) Ravi Kumar Rana said that random checks, intelligence and informers were the only ways to bust rave parties and take around drug users.
Naveen Kiran Drug Rehabilitation Centre director Uday Pratap Singh said, “Drug abuse incidents have increased in Dehradun over the years.”
He said drugs like ecstasy, smack, LSD and bhaang and its derivatives were very common in rave parties as some of them don’t smell from the consumer like liquor. Pratap said that isolated places, homes and shady city outskirts were the common places for drug parties.
