They had also recently robbed a family of 1.35 lakh and a gold chain at gunpoint while they were returning home on a motorcycle after withdrawing money from a bank in New Friends Colony (NFC) area, the police said.

The police said the gang that the couple —Junair alias Tukda and his wife Huda—was heading was earlier led by Muneer, the key accused in murder of NIA DSP Tanzeel Ahmad and his wife Farzana that took place in UP’s Bijnor on April 2, 2016. Muneer was held in June the same year.

“Junair was a key member of Muneer’s gang. After Muneer’s arrest, Junair took charge of the gang. He was also wanted in a murder case in Aligarh in which a 20,000 reward had been announced on his arrest,” Chinmoy Biswal, deputy commissioner of police (southeast), said, adding the third arrested suspect was identified as 20-year-old Adnan alias Golden.

DCP Biswal said Junair’s wife and a teenager would collect information about potential victims and pass it on to Junair and other gang members, who in turn would rob them at gunpoint.

The arrest of the three came following an investigation into a robbery case filed at the NFC police station on the complaint of a 35-year-old woman. She alleged that she was riding a motorcycle with her husband and two children when three men on another motorcycle waylaid them and robbed the bag of cash and a gold chain at gunpoint on March 5.

“ The CCTV footage of the bank from where the complainant had withdrawn the money was examined. The activities of a woman and a teenager were found suspicious and we found that they did not have an account at the bank and were just wandering aimlessly,” Biswal said.

The investigating team activated intelligence networks that help establish the woman’s identity as Huda, the wife of a wanted man, Jubair. They were found to be living in Jamia Nagar. Their rented flat was then raided and Jubair was nabbed on April 18. His interrogation led to Huda’s arrest from Chhatarpur. Their interrogation helped nab Adnan from Aligarh after a brief encounter, the police said.

“Two countrymade pistols, six bullets, a stolen gold chain and a motorcycle used in the crime were seized. Efforts are on to nab the other suspects—one Salman and the minor boy—who were involved in the robbery,” Biswal said.
