Delhi Metro’s South Campus-Lajpat Nagar section on Pink Line inaugurated
With the South Campus-Lajpat Nagar corridor of Delhi Metro’s Pink Line becoming functional, commuters will be able to reach the city’s popular markets such as Sarojini Nagar, INA, South Extension and Lajpat Nagar.
Come Monday afternoon, commuters from across the city will have an easier access to four south Delhi markets. The Delhi Metro inaugurated the Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus-Lajpat Nagar section of the Pink Line on Monday morning and the line will be open for public by afternoon.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said that the section was inaugurated by Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and Union minister of housing and urban affairs Hardeep Singh Puri via video conferencing from the Metro Bhawan.
“The 8.1 km section will be flagged off at 9.30am via remote control,” the DMRC said in a statement on Sunday.
Passengers will be able to use the section from 1pm on Monday.
The Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus-Lajpat Nagar section is the second section of the Pink Line to be opened. The corridor between Majlis Park and Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus, which is already operational was inaugurated in February this year.
With this corridor becoming functional, commuters will be able to reach the city’s popular markets such as Sarojini Nagar, INA, South Extension and Lajpat Nagar.
This portion will have six stations — Sir Vishweshwariah Moti Bagh, Bhikaji Cama Place, Sarojini Nagar, INA, South Extension and Lajpat Nagar. Except Moti Bagh, all stations on the line are underground.
Two interchange facilities connecting the line with the Yellow Line (Huda City Centre-Samaypur Badli) at INA and with Violet Line (Escorts Mujesar-Kashmere Gate) at Lajpat Nagar will also be available now.
From Monday to Saturday, 20 trains will run in a single loop from Majlis Park to Lajpat Nagar with a peak hour frequency of 5 mins and 25 seconds. On Sundays, however, nine trains will run between Majlis Park and Lajpat Nagar with a frequency 5 mins and 45 seconds, a DMRC spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said that the remaining section of the entire Pink Line corridor would be operational by September this year.
