More rains expected in Delhi this week, says Met department

Delhi is expected to continue experiencing intermittent spells of light rain and drizzle throughout the week , the meteorological department has said. The forecast came after heavy rain lashed the national capital on Monday afternoon, the third heaviest shower in Delhi this season after the onset on monsoon on June 28.
“Monday’s rain was triggered by a cyclonic circulation that developed over Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. There are chances of another heavy spell on Thursday and Friday as the monsoon trough, which triggers rain wherever it goes, is likely to move closer to Delhi. At present, the trough is located south of Delhi,” said Kuldeep Srivastava, a senior scientist with the India Meteorological Department’s regional weather forecasting centre.
On Monday, Safdarjung, which is taken to be a representative of Delhi’s weather, received 32 mm of rain. The heaviest shower was reported from the Ridge area where it rained 38.6 mm. While Palam received around 25.2 mm, Aya Nagar recorded the lowest rain of 1.7 mm.
This is the third heaviest rain in Delhi this season. The heaviest rain was recorded on Friday when it rained 52.4 mm in just around two hours.
“Since July 1, Delhi has received only around four days of heavy rain. On July 3, the city received around 25 mm rain, on July 6 there was 34.2 mm and on July 13 there was 52.4 mm,” said a senior official.
The day’s maximum temperature was recorded at 34.1 degrees Celsius, which was one degree less than normal. But the high relative humidity levels made the weather muggy.
“Even though the mercury had dropped to around 28 degrees Celsius soon after the rain, the humidity level touched 100% around 5:30 pm. This made the conditions uncomfortable,” said an official.
The intense downpour resulted in water logging on several roads. Water logging was reported from Rani Jhansi road, Rajouri Garden, Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, Minto Bridge, Zakhira flyover, Qutub Chowk and Moti Nagar flyover among others.
A cluster bus broke down and nearly two-thirds of the vehicle got submerged in the stranded water on Minto Road. On Friday too, when Delhi received its heaviest rainfall of the season, a bus got submerged on Minto Road. The Delhi Traffic Police received around 29 calls in which citizens complained of water logging.
