This year, a total of 6,167 candidates appeared from Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain. And 5,753 qualified.

"Gulf countries are very important for us and this year 93.29 per cent of students have passed the examinations, a slight decrease from last year's pass percentage of 94.42," said CBSE chairman Ashok Ganguly.

"As usual, girls in this region have performed better than boys. While 95.15 percent girls have passed the examination, 91.28 percent boys have achieved success," Ganguly told IANS.

Ganguly said students from 54 Gulf schools had appeared at 32 centres.

In 2006, 96.03 per cent girls had tasted success as against 92.63 per cent boys.

In both India and overseas, the trend of girls outshining boys in the CBSE examinations continued. While girls had a pass percentage of 85.02 per cent, boys were worse off with 77.37 per cent.

Among the six regions in India, Chennai topped the table with a pass percentage of 91.39 followed by Ajmer (85.18 percent), Panchkula (83.56 per cent), Delhi (81.93), Allahabad (76.17 per cent) and Guwahati at the bottom of the list with 58.2 per cent.

Ganguly said the Class 10 results would be declared next week.
