The 104-kilometre network will cost R55,000 crore and is expected to carry 1.5 million passengers daily.

Delhi transport minister Satyendar Jain said, “We have approved the proposal of construction of Metro Phase IV submitted by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.”

Six lines, Inderlok–Indraprastha, Tughlakabad–Terminal 1, Lajpat Nagar–Saket G-Block, Janakpuri (West)-RK Ashram and Mukundpur-Maujpur are proposed in phase IV.

These lines, in addition with the 140 kilometres of Metro network being added in Phase III, are expected to free up traffic bottlenecks in the congested central and southern parts of the city and help people living in outer Delhi.

Phase III is likely to be completed by December and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was seeking approval for the next phase for more than a year.

The new phase will also benefit south Delhi residents as it will provide them an option of taking the Metro to go to the airport and other localities.

The DMRC originally proposed to build a 20-km-long corridor between the existing Aerocity and Tughlakabad metro stations but has now extended it to Terminal 1 station.

The line will go through densely populated areas such as Sangam Vihar, Saket, Mehrauli, Vasant Kunj and Mahipalpur in south Delhi.

Passengers travelling on the Violet (ITO-Faridabad) line will have the option to board Metro for this corridor from Tughlakabad while passengers on the Yellow line can take the Metro from Saket.

“Currently the airport line is connected only with the Gurgaon-Jahangirpuri line that too at New Delhi railway station. Once this line, which is part of phase IV of DMRC, is completed, passengers will have different options of going to airport. From Aerocity, they can take the airport line to go to Terminal 3,” said a senior DMRC official.

The Phase IV will also add to the ridership of the existing airport line as passengers travelling on other lines will also be able to board the Metro for the airport. Almost 15 kms of this line will be underground because of space constraints.

“The project will now be forwarded to the Union government and once the formal approval comes, the tendering process will start,” the official added.
