Delhi police on Sunday arrested Aam Aadmi Party legislator from Okhla Aamanatullah Khan for threatening and abusing a woman.
“We have arrested the legislator today (Sunday) morning as the complainant again informed the police that he was threatening her and also trying to manipulate the evidences,” additional deputy commissioner of police (South East) Rajeev Ranjan said. He would be produced in court later in the day.
AAP leader and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal confirmed the arrest. “Just in - Modi ji arrests one more AAP MLA,” he tweeted. Kerjiwal and his party accuse the Modi government at the Centre of abusing its control of the Delhi police to settle political scores with the AAP.
The 35-year-old woman had filed a case against Khan on July 20 for allegedly threatening her with dire consequences.
A case was registered against the legislator under Sections 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Jamia Nagar police station in south Delhi, the officer said.
The woman’s complaint said she had gone to the MLA’s house in south Delhi’s Batla House on July 10 to draw his attention to poor power supply in the area.
One of his supporters hurled abuses at her and threatened her with dire consequences, she alleged. She was abused on the “orders of Khan”.
