Even as the Delhi Police embarked on a spree of arrests in connection with various shooting incidents, the biker called Bunty remained elusive. This meant more trouble for the road users in the city on Thursday.

The barricades created traffic snarls on Nizamuddin Bridge but the situation was better than on Wednesday. Certain roads did see removal of barricades as in the case of Janakpuri. Possibly because of Tihar Jail in the vicinity, there have been barricades on Lal Sain Mandir Marg for years together. But daily commuters on the road were in for a pleasant surprise when they saw the barricades missing this morning.

The police said that the barricades helped in controlling crime. But people find it a reason for jams. Said a senior police officer, “When barricades are put up by police, it helps in two ways mainly. A person, who has started with an intention to loot or commit any other crime, goes back home when he sees these barricades. Also, someone else, who is already on the road, either drops the idea of crime or postpones it.”

Checking during barricading leads to arrest of petty thieves and recovery of stolen vehicles, the officer added. People on the other hand feel harassed during such exercises. “Jams due to barricades lead to huge losses — in terms of fuel, man hour and mental peace,” said S Deepak, who travels between CP and Ghaziabad daily for work.

But the situation may not change soon. Delhi police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said, “The barricading will continue for a few more days.”
