These and other decisions were taken on Friday by the Delhi Police to ensure safety of women in the Capital, two days after a 30-year-old BPO employee was abducted and raped by five men while she was returning home from work.

"If any woman is stranded, she is advised to call the PCR helpline. The van will drop her to her house," said Rajan Bhagat, Delhi Police spokesperson.

The police added that Station House Officers of localities where girls from the northeastern part of the country live in large numbers have also been directed to meet them and sensitise them about security on a regular basis.

"The police have also intensified patrolling and checking vulnerable roads at night," Bhagat said.

A senior police official said Special Commissioner (Crime) Ranjit Narayan will write to BPOs asking them to take necessary measures to ensure safety of their employees.

Hindustan Times had reported that the Delhi Police's Crime Branch had a meeting with BPO companies to ensure better security of women, especially who work in the night shift.

"Effective check and control of the movement of the office cab with GPS system and verification of drivers were emphasised. It was also stressed that they should drop the women at their doorsteps and move only after getting telephonic confirmation," added Bhagat.

On Tuesday, Joint Commissioner of Police (southern Range) Amulya Patnaik also held a meeting with the representatives of BPOs.
