Through his counsel Inderjeet Barnala, Gurjeet Singh said that his wife Baljeet Kaur and her family, in collusion with policemen at Janak Puri police station, registered a false FIR on January 23, 2006, stating he had assaulted her family members.

"He was in judicial custody on the day concerned. He could be released from jail only on January 24, 2006, on bail as per sessions court order," said Barnala in court.

Calling it a frame-up, a city court sought a report from the deputy commissioner of police and his battery of policemen to explain the false FIR. Slamming the police, the additional chief metropolitan magistrate (ACMM) said, "Till date, it is not informed as to what action is taken against the informants for the false information."

The ACMM noted that the police superceded court's power and cancelled the FIR on February 27, 2006. Barnala contended that police officials to cover their wrongdoing, and to shield Baljeet and her family in the case, fudged official data to show non-existence of FIR.

The court noted that Kaur and her family constructed a false case against Singh. "False information was given by Jaspal (father of Baljeet) and her to the police knowingly, presumably for the purpose of cancelling bail of the complainant (Gurjeet)," said the court.

The court has summoned Kaur and her parents and sought an action taken report from the deputy commissioner of police (west).
