Cool hangouts of South Delhi
These hangouts have seen generations of students, who have added to their history and become a part of it too, writes Sumegha Gulati.
A chilly winter morning, silent surroundings and a bunch of friends sipping hot coffee, reflecting upon their lives. Whether it's discussing the latest trends over a sizzling plate of momos or talking about the career plans over thanda banta, the hours spent hanging out with friends are the most memorable and intellectually stimulating.
South Delhi is an area where the most à la mode college crowd can be spotted.
Students of D.C.A.C., Venky, JMC and Maitreyi can be seen chilling out in the Sarojini Nagar Market well liked for Muchhal Sweets, Chaat and Keventers Shakes. The corner pakoda and lassi shops in Nauroji Nagar, next to SN, are very old and extremely popular among street food enthusiasts.
Generation after generation have come here to savour their taste buds. Though the popularity of Chanakya Complex has come down considerably after the Cinema Hall and the Nirula's were shut down, students still swear by the famous backside Momo Market. Decent Indian food is served there too.
The happening crowd of LSR frequent the Lajpat Nagar Market and the 3 C's mall apart from their own cafeteria. Says Dilpreet Sandhu, "We are regular visitors to the N and M blocks of GK market that offers a wide range of appealing places. The Fab India outlet in GK market is regarded as the best in Delhi."
Those attending Gargi and Kamala Nehru can be spotted lazing around in the Anand Lok shopping Center, commonly known as "mithas" that is just across the road other than the numerous dhabas around Hauz Khas and the Green park Market renowned for its gol gappas and traditional Bengali Sweets.
Apart from the above mentioned zones, young populace from all over south Delhi hangs out in Priyas and South Ex habitually.
Rishabh Gulati, a pass out, reminisces, "Even though places like Yo! China, barcode, TGIF and Barista are a bit expensive, Priyas caters to the trendiest crowd. Catching the latest flicks on PVR would also be on our agenda. South Ex is where everyone would throng after classes. Barista, McDonalds, Ansal Plaza and the juice shop are places we literally lived after classes."
Students can be seen in Khan Market too, admired for Khan Chacha's rolls, Barista's, Choco La and Chonahs.
All these places have stood as testimony to the numerous lives that have been shaped in the campus. Once the aspirants enter DU, they too will subsequently become a part of this history.
