The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has begun a probe against four Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) engineers who had allegedly ganged up with brokers to extract money from owners of illegal buildings in Karol Bagh.
The four MCD engineers, according to the CBI, were extorting “protection money” from building owners having allegedly unauthorised constructions in lieu of not acting against them.
The CBI on Friday lodged two cases against the engineers, including assistant engineer S.K. Lakra, junior engineer Umesh Parashar, junior engineer T.C. Meena and junior engineer K.S. Meena.
The accused, revealed a CBI investigator, were running a racket along with a few “middlemen” to identify the “targets that were building owners having illegal constructions”.
After taking bribes from building owners, the accused would either not act against them or initiate only “token demolitions of unauthorised constructions and allow commercial activities in residential areas”, the official said .
The accused would also initiate “bogus sealing to threaten and terrorise the owners of buildings”.
After negotiations they would collect “huge amounts as bribe, either directly or through middlemen,” said the officer.
Since Friday, the CBI had conducted searches at the office and residences of the accused at 16 spots. A large number of incriminating documents showing nexus between the accused persons were recovered.
