The proposed amendment in the Motor Vehicles Act to increase compensation to Rs 1 lakh is pending before the Rajya Sabha, reports Harish V Nair.
Ridiculing the grant of just Rs 50,000 as interim compensation to the kin of those who die in road accidents, the Delhi High Court on Thursday said that the life of a human being should not be cheaper than even a ‘Nano’.
“In any event, it is to be remembered that life of a human being is not cheaper than a Nano car”, wrote Justice Kailash Gambhir awarding Rs 4.6 lakh to the parents of a 21-year-old who was killed by a Blueline bus nine years ago.
