As BJP leaders Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj made another attempt to enter Jammu and Kashmir to hoist the national flag on Republic Day eve at Srinagar's Lal Chowk, home minister P Chidambaram asked them to give up the "path of confrontation" and not push any "political agenda" that would certainly affect peace in Kashmir.

"I would request the two Leaders of the Opposition (in Parliament) and their colleagues to give up the path of confrontation, return to Delhi and join the celebrations in Delhi on Republic Day," Chidambaram said.

"It would be most unfortunate if the BJP leaders defy the restrictions placed by the state government or deliberately cause a breach of peace," he said on Tuesday as the BJP's Ekta Yatra entered the final stage.

The Congress also stepped up its attack the BJP.

"Whatever they are doing is not an expression of patriotism. It is a political tamasha…they should not have done this," Congress leader Janardan Dwivedi said.
