Partha Sen, director of Delhi School of Economics (DSE) said, “The Ratan Tata Library is the best social sciences library. A major financial boost was needed to overhaul it. We had approached the finance ministry for the same and are very happy to have received the grant.”

Besides maintaining books, the amount of Rs7 crore will be used to restore journals. “We have some very valuable journals such as the census, which dates back to 1871, and are lying in tatters. Before air-conditioners came, coolers, which can be very damaging, were used to preserve them. The fund will help us restore these valuable documents,” added Sen.

The DSE houses about 3.75 lakh books, bound volumes of periodicals, government reports, documents of international organisations and electronic databases, particularly in the fields of Economics, Commerce, Sociology, Geography and Management.
