Radhika Tanwar, 20, a resident of Naraina village in west Delhi, was shot in the back as she was coming down a pedestrian bridge in Dhaula Kuan’s Satya Niketan area. She and her friend were going for classes at Ram Lal Anand College in South Campus around 10.30am.

Radhika’s father Rajendra Singh Tanwar said Aditya, the only eyewitness to the murder, identified the killer as a student of the same college and gave him chase but failed to nab him.

The police suspect Radhika’s killer lives in the same locality. “He was reportedly harassing the girl for the past few days. The victim’s relatives apparently reprimanded the person once. We are trying to nab him,” said a senior police officer.

HGS Dhaliwal, deputy commissioner of police (south), said: “It appears that Radhika was specifically targeted with the intention of killing her. There was no attempt to snatch her money or purse.”

The police said Radhika had reportedly told her friends and relatives that a man had been following her for a few days but she didn’t know who he was.

Her family members said she left for college with Aditya by bus as usual and got off near the pedestrian bridge. “While she was going down the ramp, the assailant shot her in the back. She was taken by a civilian and a police constable to Safdarjung Hospital where she was declared brought dead,” her father said. “I don’t know who could have done this to my daughter. She had no enmity with anyone.”

There was some confusion initially after Radhika Tanwar was shot dead – with two separate calls being made to the Police Control Room.

While the first call reported that a girl had been shot dead outside Ram Lal Anand College, the second call said that someone had been hurt when a mobile phone exploded.

Radhika's father Rajender Singh Tanwar, a property dealer residing in Naraina Village told reporters "my daughter was a very simple girl…I cant imagine why anyone would want to kill her".

Seconds after she was shot, Radhika was taken to the Safdarjung Hospital where doctors said she was "brought dead".

The bullet hit her in the spine.
