A first-year student of Delhi University’s Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing has complained of ragging in the college hostel, reports HT Correspondent.

A first-year student of Delhi University’s Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing has complained of ragging in the college hostel. The student Madhu (name changed), who called up her father late on Thursday night, has complained that seniors ragged her and others. Delhi University officials confirmed the reports but said no FIR had been lodged yet.

First year students alleged that they were forced to wear salwar kameez and oil their hair. “Those of us who did not have salwar kameez had to get it by hook or by crook. We were also asked to behave in a polite manner in front of seniors,” said a first year student.

However, it was not clear what exactly Madhu was asked to do. She refused to talk to the media when contacted.

“I got a call from the South Campus informing me of the complaint. I immediately visited the college and found that the college did not have a disciplinary resource person, which is mandatory,” said M.M. Rehman, deputy proctor. “The hostel warden should also be available all the time, either physically or through telephone. But there was no provisions for students to contact the warden,” Rehman said.

Moreover, the college had violated all rules related to ragging since it did not have an anti-ragging squad or a monitoring cell. “They were not able to produce any papers or documents. We have ordered an enquiry and will take action after the college submits its report on Monday,” Rehman said.

But principal Kalpana Mandal denied that ragging regulations had been violated. “We have an anti-ragging squad but the student did not approach the college or any members of the squad. We have yet to confirm if there was any ragging,” Mandal said.

If a case of ragging is confirmed then action would be taken against the seniors identified by the victim. “Under the university ordinance, the students can be debarred or rusticated,” said Rehman.
