If you were happy taking part in the Earth Hour recently, Earth Day today – Wednesday April 22 – gives you another opportunity to chip in to help save the Planet.
This year marks the countdown for the 40th anniversary of Earth Day in 2010.
The Earth Hour on March 28 has seen power savings to the tune of 600 MW. This time, leading the green brigade, are school students of Delhi and NCR. Just like it was done during the Earth Hour, fix one hour per month for yourself and switch off all the lights in your home was the Special Assembly message at St Thomas School on Wednesday.
“We plan to increase awareness of students about the fact that we have ‘limited resources’. We are going to introduce the concept of ‘energy audit’ for our school,” said PGT Poonam Arora.
Sriram School’s Vasant Vihar and Gurgaon branches are making thousands of paper bags as part of shramdaan. “Students from Gurgaon will visit posh markets and dissuade people from using polythene bags,” Madhu Bhatnagar of Sriram School said.
A huge sculpture made from waste awaits the students at the Vasant Vihar branch, where a film would be screened to sensitise students on the issue of environmental awareness.
Amita Wattal of Echoes Springdale School, Pusa, said, “Many activities have been planned on the ‘Sustainable Development’ theme considering the aspects that keep the earth alive. We tell children about pure water, clean air … how not to use plastic bags.”
The ‘environmentally sensitive’ school where environmental activities have been a tradition for over a decade plans to hold a special assembly, which will host an article-reading, tree planting and T-shirt painting events on the day.
