Party general secretary Prakash Karat flagged off the first rally in Kanyakumari on Sunday. Karat said his party is firmly opposed to the neoliberal economic policies being followed by both the Congress and the BJP.

"These policies subsidise the rich, including foreign companies, and victimise the poor, which has resulted in intensification of social and economic inequalities. These policies have led to unprecedented corruption," Karat said.

A party statement said that purpose of the jatha is to highlight issues facing the people and to set out an alternative.

The rallies will focus on right to land and house-sites, land reforms, curbing price rise and right to food. The CPM has been demanding making the public distribution system universal, up to 35 kg of foodgrains at a maximum price of Rs. 2.
