For the second time in 10 days, Metro services were disrupted on the Gurgaon route on Sunday due to a problem in the overhead electrification (OHE). Thousands of commuters were left stranded for more than an hour until the services were finally resumed at 10.46pm.

Last week, a similar problem had led to the disruption of services on parts of the same 44-km Line 2 (Jehangirpuri-HUDA City Centre) for over four hours. Sunday's problem with overhead electrification between Central Secretariat and Sultanpur stations disrupted the services to the HUDA City Centre (Gurgaon), Metro officials said.

Hundreds of people were seen standing outside Sultanpur, MG Road and other stations in Gurgaon, after the problem interrupted the services at 9.20pm. Sparks were noticed on the OHE between the Qutub Minar and Chhatarpur Metro stations, and train services on the Central Secretariat-Sultanpur stretch were affected said a DMRC spokesperson.

However, services between Central Secretariat and Jehangirpuri were not affected and remained normal, he added.

It was chaos at all stations on the line as thousands of people were stranded there for more than an hour waiting for trains.

Stations such as MG Road, Sultanpur and Udyog Bhawan were closed for some time and passengers were not allowed inside. Huge queues could be seen at some stations with passengers demanding refund of their money.

Delhi Metro’s connectivity with south Delhi initially cheered thousands of people mostly from the service sector.

But its reputation has been under the scanner due to repeated snags in the system and DMRC’s failure to provide any solution to commuters’ woes. On November 19, DMRC chief E Sreedharan appointed a high level committee to probe into such glitches.
