Faced with the dilemma of embracing a new admission criterion, some institutions such as Hindu College, Indraprastha College and Lady Shri Ram College — which previously had an entrance test for the course — have started reviewing application forms already. And according to preliminary information, the qualifying percentage for English is likely to be on the higher side for these colleges also.

“It’s too early to provide a definite answer. But looking at the applications the college has received individually, one can say that the qualifying percentage for English is going to quite high this year. The marks scored by applicants across the board are very good,” said Kanika Khandelwal, media-coordinator, LSR.

According to a professor in LSR, the complaints regarding poor performance in English hold true only for a few sections and not for all CBSE students. “If the overall English results were bad then that would definitely reflect in the applications. But sadly that’s not the case as many of the applicants have done well in the subject,” said the teacher.

The initial review of Hindu forms, too, paints a similar picture. “Almost three-fourth of our applicants have done extremely well in their Board exams. We haven’t decided on the final cut-off yet, but going by what we have now it is likely to be in the 90s. There will probably be a differential cut-off for different streams as commerce students tend score well in the exams,” said Ashma Sharma, teacher-in-charge, English Department, Hindu College.

Manasvini Yogi of Indrapastha College reported that according to the feedback received from the teacher-in-charge of the English department their college cut-off, too, would be high and definitely be above 85. About 500 students have applied to English (Honours) in IP College separately.
