In fortress Delhi, 123 cars lifted in 4 days

This Republic Day, the Delhi Police managed to keep the citizens safe, but not their vehicles. Though the Capital was being protected by more than 70, 000 security personnel, car lifters managed to steal 123 vehicles between January 22 and January 26.

Around 111 vehicles were stolen in the corresponding period last year.

Residents blamed lack of police patrol for the thefts.

"All the police in our area were deployed elsewhere and we were left to fend for ourselves. If they can't even protect our vehicles, how will they protect us?" asked Manjeet Singh, whose Maruti WagonR was stolen from outside his house in East Delhi.

Defending the force, a senior police officer said, "We cannot be held accountable and asked to take care of just vehicles when there are bigger threats looming over the city."
