'India should not back Lankan resolution at UN'

CPI today demanded that India should not support a draft resolution tabled by Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council calling for member nations not to interfere in its internal affairs and said if New Delhi does so it amounted to "letting down" the cause of the Tamils.

Party National Secretary D Raja said India should not support the resolution tabled by Sri Lanka in the UNHCR which is a "counter" to the one tabled by certain member countries demanding a probe into war crimes committed during the last phase of the ethnic conflict in the island.

"India should not identify itself with Sri Lanka. If it does so, it means letting down the cause of the Sri Lankan Tamils," Raja said.

"India should not back the resolution at the UN. If India backs it means that the government in India supports whatever Sri Lanka has done till now," he said.

A special session of UNHCR scheduled for Tuesday is being convened at the request 17 of the 47 members of the HRC, including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland and Britain.
