Information centre for Old Delhi heritage

The Capital’s Walled City has always been a big draw for both domestic and foreign tourists. Official estimate has pegged the number at 40,000 visitors per day.

But to cater to this huge number, there isn’t a single tourist information center in the area.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi seems to have woken up to this fact and has decided to come up with a tourist information center-cum-heritage complex right opposite Old Delhi railway station.

The heritage shopping complex would house a restaurant, a bookstore, mobile shops, ATM outlet, cyber café among other facilities. Of the total 12 shops in the complex, the civic agency will manage one shop which it will run as the tourist information centre.

“A need for such a centre was felt for quite some time. A professional agency will manage the tourist information center,” said Vijay Singh, deputy commissioner of city zone, MCD.

“The redesigning work has started and will be completed within two months.”

Abhimanyu Dalal Architects, who are also the consultant for a project of redesigning and beautifying Chandni Chowk, will handle this project.

“The complex will be in sync with the architecture of the Old Delhi Railway station and the Walled City,” Singh said.

“The shops will have pillars and arches and will be red in colour to merge with the railway station.”
