“After due verification, we will be able to accommodate all those applicants, who approach us by Monday or at least by Tuesday, in the updated electoral list ,” said a senior election commission officer.
“Municipal elections are very important and everyone should vote in these elections. So if your name does not figure in the electoral list, please register yourself now,” the officer added.
Officials say that the applicant can either fill up the requisite form online or can approach the Voter Registration and EPIC centre (VREC) in the Assembly segment to apply.
It takes about 21 days from the date of filling up the application form to include the name in the voters’ list, sources said. “All those included in the voters’ list last by March 26 — the last date of filing nomination papers — will be allowed to vote in these municipal elections. We will come out with one last list few days before the date of voting,” an official said.
Senior state election commission officials said they are sparing no efforts to have as many names in the electoral list and bring them out to exercise their franchise. Senior officials said they have carefully chosen the election date to ensure their maximum participation.
“Though we will be left with just three days after the counting to form the corporations, we insisted that the polls be held on April 15. It’s a Sunday and people can easily come out to vote,” state election commissioner Rakesh Mehta said.
“The week preceding the election is an extended weekend and there are possibilities that people may go out of town for a holiday and not vote. Political parties had also expressed fear that even their workers may go out on holiday during that weekend,” Mehta added.
