The countdown to the Commonwealth Games 2010 has officially begun.

After lighting the ceremonial lamp, Khanna tried to ally fears about whether Delhi will be able to host the Games. "I am in touch with all the authorities concerned. There is no need to panic. The infrastructure will be completed on time. We are making good progress and will ensure that the Commonwealth Games are a resounding success," he said.
A laser show to the chanting of 'Vande Mataram,' following a series of dance and song performances and fireworks were the highlights of the show.
Khanna went on to unveil the high-tech baton, which was displayed by Shera, the Games mascot. The baton will now go to Queen Elizabeth, who will inscribe a message on it, following which it will travel through all 70 Commonwealth countries before coming back to Delhi.
Organising committee secretary Lalit Bhanot reinstated the optimism of Khanna. "The function was splendid. And the preceding games will be likewise," he said.
