MCD works overtime, clears proposals on a war footing

With barely a day for the model code of conduct to come into effect, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has gone into an overdrive, holding daily special meetings to clear pending proposals or to make new announcements.

The MCD seems to have suddenly woken up from its stupor and is working overtime to approve sops.

On Friday at a special meeting of the high-powered Standing Committee, the civic agency passed a proposal to purchase 11,580 sewing machines to be distributed among widows and women belonging to the economically weaker sections in each of the 272 wards.

The MCD has also decided to work overtime by holding a special Standing Committee meeting on Saturday, which is generally a holiday.

The agency will approve 35 odd proposals related to repair of roads and drains and building of new school buildings.

"The MCD is holding the meeting because there are important proposals to be passed before the code of conduct gets implemented on March 5," said Yogender Chandolia, chairman of MCD's Standing Committee.

Once the code is in place, no new project will be approved and no new structure will be inaugurated till the new municipal corporation, in this case, three new corporations are formed.
