No Maoists in Lalgarh, say Mamata’s envoys
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee sent two of her closest aides Mukul Roy and Sisir Adhikari — both Ministers of
State in the Union Cabinet — to take stock of the situation in Lalgarh.

This move was supplemented with a threat. “If police don’t stop its regime of torture and atrocities on the locals, the administration will have to pay the price and people will come down heavily on them,” she warned. After a visit to areas surrounding Lalgarh, Roy said, “There are no Maoists in Lalgarh. The police are torturing our supporters in the name of the combating the Maoists.”

CPM scuttles Trinamool’s trip
A fresh political battle between the Left and its opponents over Lalgarh broke out on Sunday, prompting home minister P. Chidambaram to caution some of his Cabinet colleagues and NGOs against visiting the conflict zone, as operations to flush out Maoist rebels were peaking.

Naxalites call for 48-hr bandh in five states
On the run in Lalgarh, CPI (Maoist) could try to carry out demonstrative acts of violence during the 48-hour bandh called across five states where they have a significant presence, the Ministry of Home Affairs warned on Sunday. The CPI (Maoist) has called for a 48-hour bandh on June 22 and 23 in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal. The home ministry believes the Maoists could target security personnel and economic infrastructure like railway and bus stations where people gather in large numbers.

Intellectuals seeks end to violence
At the behest of a section of intellectuals, the People's Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA) made a call to the Maoists to stop action in Lalgarh. The committee also appealed to the government to stall police action in the Jangal Mahal in exchange. However, committee members did not seem much convinced about a positive result emanating from the appeal.
