While Hussein lost access to his research, his sons were suspended from school. Hussein then approached the Supreme Court, seeking strictures against the Tamil Nadu government.

"I have written a letter to the Registrar General, the Supreme Court and filed a petition in the Delhi High Court giving a detailed description of the quandary faced by my family," said Hussein.

Despite shifting from Tamil Nadu to Delhi, the family's cup of woes continued to flow over. In December 2010, after a two-year-long stay in Delhi, the family was robbed and thrown out of their rented accommodation by their landlord in southeast Delhi's Friends Colony. An FIR was registered at the Friends Colony police station on December 18, 2010.

“Initially, we stayed in the open outside the Sudanese Embassy. Later, we moved to railway stations and Gurudwaras in the city," said a tearful Sundari, who hails from Tamil Nadu.
